BOX SCORE
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University volleyball team (1-8) dropped a three set match to local rival Palm Beach Atlantic 25-15, 25-18, 25-15 on the road Wednesday night at the Rubin Arena.
Showing signs of a season turnaround toward the end of the USC-Aiken Volleyball Invitational last weekend, the Sharks were hoping to reset their focus on the remaining schedule. However, their first test came against the 7-1 Sailfish who had beaten the No. 15 Flagler Saints and the same tournament in a five set match.
Samantha High (Jr., Naples, Fla.) recorded the first kill of the match to give NSU an early lead. However, four kills from Christina Alessi and Rachel Jones gave PBA the momentum they needed to win the first set. Coming out in the second, the Sharks recorded a team .333 hitting percentage on 10 kills, but PBA continued to stay out in front with 16 kills of their own to take a two-set lead. The third and final set was much like the first for the Sharks as Palm Beach Atlantic took advantage of their eight errors to win the match.
Dana Holger (Fr., Lino Lakes, Fla.) was the offensive leader for NSU with a team-high eight kills, while
Sydney Cook (Fr., Miami, Fla.) recorded five. Sarah Shifflett added 12 digs.
Mariela Quesada and Alessi both led the Sailfish with 10 kills apiece, while Jones added eight. Melissa Buckingham finished with 12 digs, and Becca Acevedo recorded a match-high 33 assists while leading PBA to a blistering .345 team hitting percentage for the match.
The Sharks will return to the friendly confines of the NSU Arena on Friday, Sept. 14 to open up Sunshine State Conference play against the Lynn Fighting Knights (7-2). The match is schedule to start at 7 p.m.
