FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – After spending the last five matches on the road, homecoming for the Nova Southeastern University volleyball team (1-9, 0-1 SSC) was bitter sweet. Opening Sunshine State Conference play against the Lynn Fighting Knights (8-1, 1-0 SSC), the Sharks fell 3-0 on Friday night at the NSU arena at the Don Taft University Center.
NSU’s
Samantha High (Jr., Naples, Fla.) was the Sharks’ top hitter on the night recording a blistering .500 hitting percentage on 10 attempts.
Sarah Shifflett (So., Boynton Beach, Fla.) continued to cover the court defensively collecting a match-high 22 digs, while
Jordan Pappas came off the bench and led the team in assists.
Returning to their home court, the Sharks appeared a little nervous in the opening set and simply could not get anything going offensively from the start. But the Fighting Knights dominated the first set with 14 kills and a .281 hitting percentage to take a one set advantage 25-14.
In the second, NSU settled down and began playing more their game. Despite nine tied scores and three lead changes, Lynn was much more efficient on the offensive end recording 18 kills and a .317 team percentage for a 25-19 win. Down two sets and leading 6-4 in the final set, the Sharks tried to fight off two more lead changes in the match, but the Fighting Knights closed by winning the final set with the same score and handed the Sharks their first SSC loss of the season 3-0.
Shannon Dugan and Angie Caple both lead the Fighting Knights with 10 kills apiece and hit .389 and .381 respectively. Abbey Brokop led Lynn with 21 assists, while Michelle Jordan finished with a team-high 12 digs.
The Sharks will head out on the road again to Pleasantville, N.Y. where they will participate in the Pace University Tournament next weekend, Sept. 21-22. NSU will face St. Mary’s and Molloy on Friday followed by another two matches on Saturday against tournament host Pace and later Franklin Pierce.
