FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The Nova Southeastern University women’s volleyball team (4-12, 1-2 SSC) powered through Florida Tech (9-5, 1-3) on Saturday night at the NSU Arena at the Don Taft University Center in three straight sets. This win marks a milestone for head coach Steve Wilcosky as his 100th career win with the Sharks.
Offensively,
Dana Holger (Fr., Lino Lakes, Minn.) and
Sydney Cook (Fr., Miami, Fla.) led the Sharks, splintering the floor with a combined 26 kills, 14 and 12, respectively. Holger was hitting at an amazing .414 percent.
Jordan Pappas (Jr., Naperville, Ill.) added 36 helpers while
Paige Boivin (Sr., Plainfield Ill.) led the team defensively with 11 digs.
Caitlin Donahue (Fr., Miami, Fla.) and
Rachel Woodson (Sr., Rogers Ark.) played well at the net putting together a combined ten blocks, five and five respectively.
The first set was all NSU, who outscored the Panthers off the get go 10-3 and never looked back. The Sharks went on a handful of runs, the largest being seven points midway through the set. NSU held the Panthers to only 15 points, taking the first set 25-15. Holger put down six in the first set with a .417 attack percentage.
The second set Florida Tech showed short signs of life but The Sharks piled it on. Tied 10-10 almost midway through the set NSU peppered the Panthers with a ten point swing putting the set out of reach for the Panthers. The Sharks continued to apply pressure holding the Panthers to 18 and taking the second set 25-18. Holger once again led the Sharks offensively putting down five more with an outstanding .714 attack percentage.
Trying to close out the match the third set was nothing more but spectacular play by both teams. The Sharks and Panthers traded points back and forth, no team leading by more then three points, all the way to a 28-26 finish. The Sharks maintained a lead for the majority of the set and had match point on three occasions but the Panthers held strong to force a decision in extra points. The Sharks kept their composure and pulled out the victory, claiming their first conference win of the season.
The Sharks are back in action again next Tuesday, Oct. 2, when the travel just north to take on Sunshine State Conference rival Barry University (7-6, 2-3 SSC) at 7:00 PM.
