FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University soccer teams will host the Rollins Tars in a doubleheader Saturday at the NSU Soccer Complex. The women (4-7-1, 0-3-1 SSC) kick off the night against Rollins (9-3-0, 3-1-0 SSC) at 5 p.m. before the men (3-5-3, 0-3-1 SSC) take on No. 2 Rollins (12-0-0, 4-0-0 SSC) at 7:30 p.m.
The night will serve as the final Shark Night of the fall season. Fans are encouraged to come out in their white Sharks gear to white-out the NSU Soccer Complex. NSU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will be on hand to cheer on the Sharks and raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
The women's team has been going through its toughest stretch of matches of the season. Including tomorrow's match with Rollins, NSU will have played the top four teams in the Sunshine State Conference in a four-game span. NSU most recently fell to the No. 17 Tampa Spartans, 1-0, in a defensive struggle. The Spartans scored the game winner in the sixth minute of the match, and then held the Sharks' offense in check for the final 84 minutes.
The Tars, currently second in the conference, have won three of its first four SSC matches. Their only blemish came at home against Barry last Saturday, 1-0. Rollins has been led offensively by freshman Paxton Sickler, who has tallied seven goals this season for the Tars. Rollins is most recently coming off of a 3-2 win on the road against Florida Southern.
This will be the 15th time these teams have played each other. The last time NSU took down the Tars was in 2007, when the Sharks won, 2-1.
The men will face their toughest opponent of the season Saturday, taking on a team that has defeated every squad put in front of them. Rollins has made mincemeat of four of the South Region's NSCAA ranked teams, and with five matches remaining, have their eyes set on a perfect regular season.
On the other hand, the Sharks' struggles have put them on the opposite side of the standings. With four SSC matches left, NSU is fighting for every point to make the conference tournament. A win or draw on Saturday, followed by three matches against the bottom-half of the conference, can flip NSU's postseason fate.
NSU was in a similar spot last season, hosting No. 1 Lynn late in the year. NSU defeated the eventual NCAA National Champions, 1-0, giving Lynn its only conference loss of the year. NSU has also risen to the occasion this season, going 1-0-1 against top-10 nationally ranked teams.
