Men’s Soccer Falls in High-Scoring Duel With No. 2 Rollins, 6-3

Rollins allows season-high three goals to Sharks.

Box Score

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University men's soccer team (3-6-3, 0-4-1 SSC) scored three goals Saturday against No. 2 Rollins (13-0-0, 5-0-0 SSC), the most the Tars have allowed this year, but came up short, 6-3, at the NSU Soccer Complex.

The Sharks became just the third team this season, along with Flagler and Tampa, to score multiple goals against the undefeated and untied Tars. The Sharks were within a goal of Rollins while playing a man down with 15 minutes left, but the visiting team put in two down the stretch that widened the margin.

Rollins chipped in the first goal at the 13-minute mark. NSU would only trail for eight minutes, before Matthew Ilter (Sr., Lake Mary, Fla.) scored his third goal of the season. Stefano Fanfoni (So., Cremona, Italy) earned his first assist of the night on a great through ball to Ilter. The senior went one-on-one with the goalkeeper from the left side and chipped it over his head for his third score in the last six matches.

Rollins would enter the break up, 3-1, after goals in the 26th and 33rd minute. Tucker Hume scored the first two goals for Rollins before Grant Blackhurst scored the third.

The Sharks continued to fight in the second period and cut the deficit in half in the 53rd minute. Fanfoni once again found a man open in the box, this time junior Vincenzo Padula (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.). Padula headed the ball past the keeper to score his first collegiate goal.

The Sharks would take a huge hit in the 59th minute, when David Robles (Jr., Miami, Fla.) was booked with a red card and NSU played a man down for the remainder of the match against one of the nation's best teams. Rollins would score their fourth goal eight minutes later off Hume's third and final score.

NSU battled for 90 minutes and cut the deficit down to one again in the 74th minute. Fanfoni earned his third assist, and team-best sixth on the year, by playing the ball to Padula on the left side of the penalty box. Padula quickly found Dylan Papa (Fr., Farmington, Conn.), who scored from 10 yards to the left of the goal.  Papa and Ilter are now tied for the team lead in goals scored. Padula has assisted on all of Papa's goals this season.

Rollins' premier offense would be too much for the 10-man Sharks squad in the end. The Tars would score two more in the 78th and 82nd minute. Andrea Giombetti (Jr., Rome) made a season-high eight saves on the evening.

The Sharks will travel to St. Petersburg for their next match against Eckerd on Oct. 23 at 6 p.m.
