Men’s and Women’s Swimming Split With Saint Leo on the Road

Sharks women post convincing win over the Lions, 170-92.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –
After competing in their first home meet on Friday, the Nova Southeastern University men's and women's swimming and diving teams immediately hit the road to face the Saint Leo Lions on Saturday in their second-straight Sunshine State Conference match-up.  The Sharks' women defeated Saint Leo, 170-92, while the men suffered the loss to the Lions, 136.5-124.5.
 
The Sharks opened the meet with a win in the women's 200-yard medley relay. Emma Wahlstrom (Fr., Stockholm, Sweden), Ashley Bransford (Sr., Santa Cruz, Aruba), Emma Lawrenz (Jr., Minnetonka, Minn.) and Alexandra Zatylny (Sr. Quebec, Canada) combined for a winning time of 1:51.98. On the men's side, Saint Leo's quartet of Pawel Trenda, Jose De Jesus, Matheus Assis, and Milton Requejo, won by setting a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:30.42, topping the NSU men's relay team by just over two seconds.
 
In the men's 1000-yard freestyle, three Sharks took first through third. Cameron Chambers (Sr., St Petersburg, Fla.) swam the winning time of 10:00.34, while Addison Cates (Jr., Port Charlotte, Fla.) finished second with a time of 10:04.98. Andrew Pittman (Fr., Plano, Texas) rounded out NSU's top trio with a third-place time of 10:05.89.
 
Brooke Munion (Fr., Bethlehem, Pa.) and Kathleen Bowman (So., Iowa City, Iowa) were the top duo in the women's 200-yard freestyle. Munion took the top spot with a time of 1:59.14, while Bowman followed with a second-place time of 2:01.95. On the men's side, Shane Kleinbeck (Jr., San Antonio, Texas) won the men's 200-free with a time of 1:45.16.
 
In the men's and women's 50-yard freestyle, NSU took the top two spots for the women and the top spot for the men. Wahlstrom won the women's event with a time of 28.36, while Kelsey Muma (Fr., Grand Rapids, Mich.) finished second at 29.74. Marco Aldabe (Fr., Alicante, Spain) won the men's with a time of 24.51.
 
The NSU women dominated the next five events with Bransford winning the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 31.92, while Lawrenz finished with the top time in the women's 100-yard butterfly at 1:01.17. Zatylny added the top time in the women's 50-yard freestyle with first-place finish at 25.49 and Munion secured top points with a time of 55.19 in the women's 100-yard freestyle. Wahlstrom rounded out the five straight event wins with a first-place time of 1:00.81 in the women's 100-yard backstroke.
 
In the 100-yard breaststroke event, Bransford added another first-place finish with a time of 1:09.51. On the men's side, Thomas Aycart (Sr., Miami, Fla.) tied for first against Saint Leo's Shaad Fincher and split the first and second place points with a time of 1:00.76.
 
The Sharks rounded out the day with four more wins in four different events. Florian Mehlan (Sr., Moers, Germany) took home first-place in the men's 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:48.21, while Lawrenz followed with a win in the women's 50-yard butterfly with a time of 27.09. The Sharks won the top three spots in the women's 100-yard individual medley, with Sammy Akoubian (Sr., Run Dacula, Ga.) finishing first at 1:03.44, while Bransford finished second at 1:04.50. Jessica Rocheleau (Jr., Jacksonville, Fla.) finished third with a time of 1:05.33. The final win for the Sharks on the day came in the women's 200-yard freestyle relay. NSU's A-relay team of Wahlstrom, Munion, Lawrenz and Zatylny finished with the top time of 1:41.10 to win the event and completed a solid day on the water for the NSU women's team.
 
The Sharks will return to the road in two weeks when they face their third straight Sunshine State Conference opponent in the Rollins Tars on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 1 p.m.
