FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Tuesday night is the Nova Southeastern volleyball team's annual "Dig Pink" match, as they face the Lynn Fighting Knights at 7 p.m. at the NSU Arena.
The matchup, to raise awareness for breast cancer, will feature many promotions and another banner unveiling. The first 200 fans will receive free pink t-shirts, sponsored by Moe's on University Drive in Davie, and in between the second and third sets, 2012 swimming individual national champions Erin Black and Oskar Nordstrand will be recognized with a banner above the arena floor.
The Sharks (4-13, 0-6 SSC) are coming off a 1-2 mark at the South Region Crossover last weekend in Carrollton, Ga. In their first match there, they went five sets for the first time this season, defeating West Alabama, 3-2. The Sharks went up 2-0, and though the Tigers fought back, NSU held on in the final set with a late comeback of their own to win 15-12.
NSU hasn't been home since Sept. 28, when they fell to Florida Southern. They had seven road matches in between then and tonight's contest.
Lynn (15-8, 2-4 SSC) also took part in last weekend's Crossover, and won three out of their four matches there. They topped Shorter in five sets and swept the host school, West Georgia, as well as Alabama-Huntsville. Their only loss was in their final match in Carrollton, a five-set marathon to West Alabama.
The Fighting Knights have two individuals ranked third or better in categories in the SSC, Marissa Tandron and Nikki Haben. Tandron actually slots in the top three twice, in aces (second, 0.45) and assists (third, 9.77). Haben is third in digs (4.82). Their leading hitter is Angie Caple, who has 240 kills, and her average of 3.08 per set is seventh in the league.
For the Sharks,
Sydney Cook (So.,Miami) rates in three categories conference-wide: fifth in both kills per set (3.16) and points (3.71), and 14th in service aces (0.30).
Dana Holger (So., Lino Lakes, Minn.) is 12th in kills (2.86) and 13th in points (3.25).
Setter
Katie Pyles (Fr., Denver) is sixth in the SSC in assists (7.53), and is now ranked in aces as well, as she is 16th at 0.29 per set. Libero
Candice Johnson (Jr., Chuluota, Fla.) continues to rank among the top defenders with her 3.36 digs per set, placing her 10th.
Besides the aforementioned promotions, Tuesday night will also feature Shark Sightings, where students who have taken a picture with Razor and tweeted it are eligible for prizes, as well as a Facebook athletics trivia contest. The College of Pharmacy will also be hosting their seventh annual Family Night with NSU Athletics.
In addition, University School seventh grade student Cade Tolchinsky will be selling copies of his book, "Dear Cancer, You Messed with the Wrong Mom." Cade is the son of Dr. CA Tolchinsky, the NSU assistant athletic director for academic services and student-athlete support. Portions of the proceeds from purchasing Cade's book will benefit Memorial Breast Care Services.
