WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern women's soccer team (5-8-1) tied the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish (4-6-2) Saturday, 2-2, in double overtime.
The Sharks got on the board in the 11th minute of the match, after
Tori Vives (So., Cooper City, Fla.) played a great through ball to
Rut Kristjansdottir (Fr., Reykjavik, Iceland). Kristjansdottir kept her composure on her one-on-one with the goalkeeper, as she slotted the ball into the far right corner. This was the first goal in Kristjansdottir's collegiate career.
The lead didn't last long as the Sailfish scored two goals in quick succession, in the 12th and 15th minutes of the half. The score line would remain at 2-1 heading into the break, with each team taking six shots a piece.
Rachel Lopez (Fr., Orlando, Fla.) came in to relieve
Sandra Rolon (Jr., San Juan, P.R.) in goal, playing the entire second half and overtime. Lopez made three saves on the day.
Malin Broberg (Sr., Stockholm, Sweden) scored a clutch goal with 25 minutes left in the second half to even the score.
Cameron Wylie (Dallas, Texas) delivered the ball to Broberg from a throw in, deep in the Sharks offensive half of the field. Broberg was able to make an athletic turn past one defender, when she was then able to rip a shot from the top right corner of the box, off of the far post and into the net.
The Sharks nearly ended the match with five minutes to play, after another throw in, this time from
Victoria Pecci (Fr., Oswego, Ill.), to
Payton Van Horn (So., Jackson, Mich.). Van Horn was able to get by one defender down the near sideline and played a low cross to Kristjansdottir. Kristjansdottir's shot found its way just wide of the far post, keeping the game even.
In the first overtime, the Sharks had the ball on their half of the field for most of the 10 minute period. However, the Sharks half chances did not find the back of the net, sending the match into the second overtime period.
Broberg had the best chance of the final overtime, when she was able to get past a couple of Sailfish defenders and took a shot from the top of the box. Goalkeeper Allison Fox was in position to make the save.
The game ended in a draw despite the Sharks out shooting their opponent 22-10.
