FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern volleyball team lost in straight sets to visiting Saint Leo on Saturday, 25-20, 25-10, 25-21 at the NSU Arena.
The first part of the opening set was back and forth, with neither team leading by more than two over the first 20 points. At 10-9, Saint Leo (17-7, 5-3 SSC) went on a short 4-1 spurt to open up a four-point lead and force an NSU timeout.
Following the break, the Sharks (5-14, 1-7 SSC) cut it to three, but the Lions scored four straight to make it 18-11. Late, the Sharks were able to cut it to four twice, but the visitors took the first by a 25-20 score.
The middle set was all Lions. They began the set up 9-2, and kept it above double digits for most of the frame, winning it by 15, 25-10.
The Sharks led for most of the opening part of the third, including being up 12-7 midway through. The Lions climbed back to tie it at 13-13 with a 6-1 run, and took their first lead at 17-16 on a kill from Lauren Campbell, one of her eight in the set. The Lions would not trail again, finishing the match with a kill from Tawni Warren.
Campbell (17) and Warren (13) combined for 30 kills in the match, and the conference's top setter, Jaclyn Mailoto, had 49 assists in the win.
The Sharks were paced by
Sydney Cook (So., Miami) and
Dana Holger (So., Lino Lakes, Minn.), with seven kills each, with five coming from
Sakkara Hart (Fr., Vero Beach, Fla.).
Katie Pyles (Fr., Denver) had 21 assists, while Holger had nine digs to lead the squad.
NSU goes back out on the road next weekend for their next-to-last trip of the year, to face two conference opponents in Florida Southern (Nov. 1, 7 p.m.) and Eckerd (Nov. 2, 4 p.m.).
