INDIANAPOLIS – The Nova Southeastern men's basketball team fell to the NCAA Division I Butler Bulldogs in an exhibition game at the historic Hinkle Fieldhouse Tuesday, 101-64.
Chris Page (So., Plainfield, Ind.) led all Sharks with 18 points on 6-for-14 shooting. Juniors
Brian Cahill (Arlington, Va.) and
Justin Jeangerard (Weaverville, Calif.) each had a team-high six boards. Cahill also chipped in nine points and a team-best five assists.
The Sharks opened the game running their offense well and earning open shot attempts, but could not find their shooting touch. NSU started the game shooting 3-for-15. Butler made the Sharks pay, opening up an early 21-7 lead. NSU found its rhythm and began playing an even contest midway through the first half. NSU worked the deficit down to 12 with eight minutes left in the half, forcing a Butler timeout.
Butler came out of the break on a 10-0 run and never looked back. They would enter the break with a lofty lead, 55-27. At halftime, sophomore newcomers Page and
Casey Carroll (Youngstown, Ohio) led NSU scorers with seven points apiece. Carroll ended the game shooting 50 percent from the floor, scoring 13 points on 5-for-10 shooting. He also collected four boards in the game.
NSU's shooting struggles continued in the second half, while Butler shot at a blistering pace. The home team shot 64 percent from the floor in the first half and made 10 of its first 18 shots. With eight minutes remaining, Butler led 87-41. Despite the large deficit, NSU continued to play hard and battle the home team. Over the final eight minutes, NSU would outscore Butler, 23-14.
Stian Berg (Jr., Baerum, Norway) came off the bench and scored seven points. Berg consistently drew fouls and earned a team-best seven free throw attempts to go with three assists. Freshmen
Cameron Denney (Norwell, Ind.) and
Mike Terry (Ironton, Ohio) scored six and four points, respectively.
NSU will open the regular season on Nov. 8 against Paine in Melbourne, Fla. at 5:30 p.m.
