MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern volleyball team was downed in their first Sunshine State Conference road match of 2013, in front of a raucous Barry crowd on Friday night, 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-18).
The first two sets saw the Sharks (3-8, 0-3 SSC) have leads throughout each, but fall prey to runs from the Buccaneers (5-5, 1-2 SSC). In the opener, NSU trailed 10-7 before rallying for six consecutive points to force a Barry timeout.
The Bucs came back with three straight of their own to tie it up, and the set went back-and-forth until the home team used a 6-1 spurt to turn a one-point lead (16-15) into six (22-16), and took the opening frame by seven.
In the second, Barry scored the first point but didn't lead again until midway through the set. NSU was up 5-1, and eventually, 12-8, before six straight by the Bucs moved them ahead 14-12. Barry went ahead by five on three occasions, and though the Sharks cut it to two late (23-21), the Bucs held on by three, 25-22.
The final set saw Barry lead wire-to-wire, and take their biggest lead of the match, nine, at 23-14. NSU had a late rally to extend the set, but the Bucs took their first conference match of the season, completing the sweep at 25-18.
