Women’s Soccer Draws in SSC Opener to Lynn, 1-1

Broberg scores ninth goal to secure the road draw.

Box Score

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern women's soccer team (4-4-1, 0-0-1 SSC) started Sunshine State Conference play with a road draw against the Lynn Fighting Knights (2-4-2, 0-0-1 SSC), 1-1, Saturday.

The Sharks played a strong first half in which they did not dominate time of possession, but created early scoring chances to set up their lead. NSU broke through in the 16th minute on Malin Broberg's (Sr., Stockholm, Sweden) ninth goal of the season. Alexandra Siciliano (Sr., New Hyde Park, N.Y.) played a great ball to Broberg from just south of the midfield line. Broberg evaded one defender and fired from the top left corner of the penalty box for the score. The assist for Siciliano was her first of the season and second of her career.

NSU went on the defensive for much of the rest of the half. Lynn took 11 shots in the first period, a majority of which were on target. Sandra Rolon (Fr., San Juan, Puerto Rico) was on point and earned six saves before the break, marking it her career high.

The style of play did not change in the second half, as the home team stayed on the attack. Broberg nearly scored again in the 56th minute with a shot from the left 30 yards out. She sent the ball past the goalkeeper but it just rolled wide.

After 17 shots from the Fighting Knights, Lynn broke through on a goal from Tatiana Penagos in the 65th minute. Rolon was caught off guard after an attack from her right side and could not get back in position in time to make the save.

With the match tied, the momentum began to shift towards NSU. The Sharks controlled the action over the last 10 minutes of regular time. NSU nearly scored the game winner with just 30 seconds remaining on the clock. The ball was mishandled by Lynn's keeper, but Broberg's shot went wide left to send the match to overtime. NSU's defense was solid over the first 90 minutes of the match, withstanding 23 shots and 11 corner kicks from the Knights.

The match was an even battle in overtime, but the Sharks were put on life support after a handball in the penalty box in the 94th minute. However, Lynn's Lauren Handley knocked her penalty kick off the cross bar and NSU's defense was able to prevent a follow-up attack. NSU had two shots in the first overtime, neither of which were on target. The second overtime was more of the same for NSU. The Sharks recorded one shot in the final minute and had their best chance on a corner kick with 28 seconds left, but could not convert.

NSU defended 30 shots on the day, eight away from a decade-old program record. Rolon ended the day with nine saves.

The Sharks will move on to face Barry in Miami Shores, Fla. Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m.
