FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern volleyball team prepares for its last week on the road this season, beginning with Tuesday's match in Boca Raton, Fla. against border rival Lynn University.
The Sharks (5-18, 1-11 SSC) look for the season sweep against the Fighting Knights (17-13, 4-8 SSC), by virtue of their victory in Fort Lauderdale on Oct. 22. NSU took the match in three sets, 25-22, 25-19, 25-21.
Lynn is coming off a straight-set win over Florida Tech at home this past Saturday. That ended a four-match losing streak for the squad, that extended back to just prior to the NSU matchup, was actually a skid of six losses in seven matches.
Since the win over the Fighting Knights, the Sharks have struggled as well, falling in their last five contests. This past weekend saw losses to Florida Tech and Barry.
Each squad features freshman setters, the top two statistically in the SSC. Lynn's Marissa Tandron is third in the league in assists at 9.78 per set, while the Sharks'
Katie Pyles (Denver) is seventh at 7.82. In addition, Tandron ranks third in aces, at 0.37 per set.
NSU's
Sydney Cook (Miami) continues to have a superb sophomore season, ranking fifth in the conference in kills (3.25 per set) and total points (3.81). Lynn's leader in kills is senior Angie Caple (eighth, 2.98), while teammate Liga Strautniece is 12th (2.72), a slot ahead of the Sharks'
Dana Holger (So., Lino Lakes, Minn.), at 2.71 a set.
Each team also ranks a player in the top 10 in digs: Nikki Haben of Lynn (fourth, 4.72), and in 10th at 3.51 per set, NSU's
Candice Johnson (Jr., Chuluota, Fla.).
