FINAL RESULTS
WINTER PARK, Fla. – After having two weeks to prepare, the Nova Southeastern University men's and women's swimming and diving teams went head-to-head in Sunshine State Conference competition at Rollins. The women's team (3-0) continued their winning streak by topping the Tars 119-86, while the men's team (2-1) got back on the winning track with a dominating 173-32 victory.
Combined, the NSU men and women won 18 of the 22 events during the meet. The women's team started the day by taking the top two spots in the women's 200-yard medley relay.
Emma Wahlstrom (Fr., Stockholm, Sweden),
Ashley Bransford (Sr., Santa Cruz, Aruba),
Laura Gutierrez (Fr., Valencia, Spain) and
Alexandra Zatylny (Sr., Quebec, Canada) combined for the top spot with a time of 1:51.72, while the Sharks' B-relay squad finished second at 1:55.35.
The NSU men also started strong by taking the top three finishes in the same event with
Marco Aldabe (Fr., Alicante, Spain),
Thomas Aycart (Sr., Miami, Fla.),
Magnus Lundgren (Jr., Stockholm, Sweden) and
Esau Simpson (Sr., St. David's, Grenada) finishing with a time of 1:36.33. NSU's B-relay team finished second at 1:39.83, while the C-relay squad posted a third-place time of 1:41.18.
Brooke Munion (Fr., Bethlehem, Pa.) continued to rack up the event wins for NSU with a winning time of 10:44.59 in the women's 1000-yard freestyle. On the men's side,
Oscar Aldabe (Sr., Alicante, Spain) posted the top time of 9:57.46, while
Chris Norris (Sr., Tallahassee, Fla.) finished second at 10:03.37.
The NSU men continued their dominance by winning the next two events.
John Michael Hayes (Sr., Jacksonville, Fla.) won the men's 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:48.88, while Simpson just missed a provisional qualifying time in the men's 50-yard freestyle with a winning time of 21.29.
In her first meet of the season, Gutierrez was not only a part of the women's winning 200-yard medley relay squad, she also posted her first single-event win of the season in the women's 200-yard individual medley relay with a time of 2:11.99, which was nearly six seconds faster than second place.
Cameron Chambers (Sr., St. Petersburg, Fla.) won the men's 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:59.94.
Over the next two events, the NSU men secured the top three spots in both the 200-yard butterfly and the 100-yard freestyle.
Santiago Pombo (Jr. Bogota, Columbia) posted the top time in the butterfly event with a winning time of 1:58.36, while Lundgren posted a winning time of 49.14 in the men's 100-free.
Kelsey Muma (Fr., Grand Rapids, Mich.) got the NSU women back on the winning track after posting the top time in the 200-yard backstroke event at 2:14.75. On the men's side, Marco Aldabe posted nearly a 12-second win over the competition with a winning time of 1:53.93.
To round out the second session of races,
Jessica Rocheleau (Jr., Jacksonville, Fla.) posted the win for the NSU women in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:17.51. Swimming the mid-distance event for the first time this season,
Shane Kleinbeck (Jr., San Antonio, Texas) won the men's 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:46.81.
Bransford and Aycart both posted the top times in the 200-yard breaststroke events for the Sharks. Bransford swam a time of 2:26.32 for the women, while the Aycart led the men's finish with a time of 2:13.03.
The day ended with the women's team securing the top two spots in the 800-yard freestyle and the men's team earning the top three. Gutierrez, Munion, Bransford and Wahlstrom posted the top time of 8:00.29, while the women's B-relay team finished second at 8:10.05. Kleinbeck,
Florian Mehlan (Sr., Moers, Germany), Pombo and Marco Aldabe finished at 7:04.18 for the men's top time, while the NSU C-relay squad finished second at 7:18.10 and the NSU B-relay team finished third at 7:18.37.
Both the men's and women's teams will return to the friendly waters of the NSU Aquatic Complex on Thursday, Nov. 7 at 3 p.m. hosting junior college powerhouse Indian River.
