Box Score

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern volleyball team dropped its second three-setter of the weekend, in a close affair to Eckerd on Saturday afternoon, 25-18, 25-22, 25-22.

In the opening frame, the Tritons (15-8, 6-4 SSC) scored four straight to break a 5-5 tie and led the rest of the way. The Sharks (5-16, 1-9 SSC) did cut it to three late, 19-16, but Eckerd outscored the visitors 6-2 to end the first, winning 25-18.

The second set saw Eckerd open up on an 8-1 run, but the Sharks stormed back. They doubled up the home team 14-7 to knot things up at 15-15, behind four kills in that span from Sydney Cook (So., Miami) and three by Samantha High (Sr., Naples, Fla.).

For the next 14 points, there were six ties, the last coming at 22-22. But the Tritons closed out the set with a kill, ace, and an attack error by the Sharks for the last three points and a 25-22 set win.

The third was a lot like the second, back and forth all throughout. From an 8-8 tie, Eckerd had a short 5-1 spurt for a four-point lead, 13-9. The Sharks got four straight of their own to tie it at 13-13, including kills from High and Laurel Weaver (Fr., Woodland Hills, Calif.).

The Tritons would take their biggest lead of the set, five, at 20-15, only to see the Sharks get five straight. Included were kills by Weaver and Dana Holger (So., Lino Lakes, Minn.), a block from Holger, and kills from Cook and Weaver.

The teams traded points for another tie at 22-22. But again, to close out the set, Eckerd would score the last three. This time, it gave them the match win.

Each of the second and third sets featured eight ties. There were 19 total ties throughout the match.

Cook led the way for NSU with 11 kills, while High tied her season high with 10, and had a team-best .421 hitting percentage. She was also in on four blocks. Weaver had seven kills, and Holger had five.

Weaver set a new career high and tied Candice Johnson (Jr., Chuluota, Fla.) for game-high honors with 15 digs, while Holger had nine. Katie Pyles (Fr., Denver) had 27 assists in the loss.

The Sharks return home for a doubleheader next weekend, with each match scheduled for a 7 p.m. first serve. They will face Florida Tech on Friday, Nov. 8, and Barry the next day at the NSU Arena.
