FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern volleyball team will host its final two matches of the 2013 season this weekend, bidding farewell to three players prior to the latter contest on Saturday at the NSU Arena.
The Sharks (5-20, 1-13 SSC) will face two Sunshine State Conference foes, on Friday and Saturday respectively, in No. 1 Tampa and Rollins. The Spartans, the newly-ranked top overall squad by the AVCA this week, are 27-1 and 14-0 in-conference. Their only loss this season came on Sept. 14 against six-time defending national champion (and No. 1 up until last week) Concordia-St. Paul.
Since then, the team has won 20 straight matches and has only dropped seven sets during that span. Included in that time frame was a three-set sweep of the Sharks, in Tampa on Oct. 12. As a team, the Spartans lead the conference in hitting percentage (for and against), kills and blocks, and are second in assists. Outside hitter Berkley Whaley, who has won the SSC Player of the Week award five times including this past week, leads the league in kills (3.67 per set), aces (0.49) and points (4.60).
Saturday night will be the Sharks' Senior Night, prior to their 4 p.m. match with Rollins (21-9, 8-6 SSC).
Destiny Bannister (Kendall, Fla.),
Kristina Eric (Sokolac, Bosnia and Herzegovina) and
Samantha High (Naples, Fla.) will be honored in prematch ceremonies.
The Sharks and Tars met up in Winter Park on Oct. 11, with Rollins winning on their home floor in four sets. They also feature one of the league's best players in Camille Indest, second in kills (3.62) and points (4.39) and fourth in hitting percentage (.333). The Tars also have the top player in digs, Collyn Welsch, at an even five per set.
For the Sharks,
Sydney Cook (So., Miami) continues her campaign for the All-SSC team, as she ranks fifth in the conference in both kills (3.28 per set) and points (3.83). Likewise, SSC All-Newcomer candidate
Katie Pyles (Fr., Denver) is seventh in the league in assists (7.89), and also ranks among the leaders in aces, tying for 14th at 0.27 per set.
Sophomore
Dana Holger (Lino Lakes, Minn.) is 12th in the SSC in kills (2.67) and tied for 13th in points (3.13).
Candice Johnson (Jr., Chuluota, Fla.) slots 10th in digs (3.45), and for the first time this year, High is listed among SSC stat leaders, ranking 20th in blocks (0.62).
