Volleyball Wins Season Finale over Rollins

Sharks honor three athletes during senior day festivities.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern volleyball team (6-21, 2-14 SSC) finished the year on a high note, defeating the Rollins Tars (22-10, 9-7 SSC), 3-1 (18-25, 25-16, 25-21, 25-23), Saturday at the NSU Arena.

Sydney Cook (So., Miami) led the Sharks on offense with 19 kills on 51 attacks. She also contributed seven digs and two aces. Katie Pyles (Fr., Denver) totalled 46 assists and 12 digs. Candice Johnson (Jr., Chuluota, Fla.) had a team-best 23 digs.

Prior to the match, NSU honored three student-athletes, Samantha High (Sr., Naples, Fla.), Kristina Eric (Sr., Sokolac, Bosnia and Herzegovina) and Destiny Bannister (Jr., Kendall, Fla.), who were competing in their final match at the NSU Arena.

Rollins controlled the first set from the opening serve on, jumping out to an early 10-5 lead. They would eventually build a double-digit lead at 22-12. The Sharks found their rhythm from there. Although they lost the set, 18-25, NSU fought off four set points before giving up the first.

The Sharks carried their late first-set momentum into the second. NSU won seven of the first eight points and never looked back. They established their largest lead of the set at 12-2 and later led by double-digits again at 21-11. Rollins made a late surge, bringing its deficit down to six points, but the Sharks took the set, 25-18.

In the third, NSU continued to roll and went up six points quickly at 10-4. NSU controlled the action from there on out, never trailing in the third frame. NSU would lead by as much as eight points, and eventually took a 25-21 set win.

With Rollins on the brink of losing its final match of the regular season, the Tars jumped out to a 6-1 lead early in the fourth game. NSU brought it back to two at 7-5, but Rollins jumped back out to a 10-6 advantage. From there, NSU took back the momentum with a 7-3 run to tied the frame at 13.

NSU and Rollins traded the next 20 points equally, giving the fans at the NSU Arena the most exciting action of the day. Dana Holger (So., Lino Lakes, Minn.) earned a kill out of a timeout to set up her team's first match point at 24-23. Holger would repeat on the next play to win a match-clinching set, 25-23.

Holger and High finished the day with 11 and nine kills, respectively. They only needed a combined 45 attacks to hit their mark. Bannister earned 10 kills in her final match with NSU on 23 attacks.
