FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern volleyball team fell at home to Barry on Saturday night, 25-20, 25-22, 25-14.
The Sharks (5-18, 1-11 SSC) and Buccaneers (10-14, 3-9 SSC) played even-up through the first set, with seven ties. The last came at 10-10, and up until that point, neither squad led by more than three.
Barry moved ahead by four at 16-12, prompting a Shark timeout. The home team later cut it to two at 20-18, but was outscored the rest of the way 5-2 as the Bucs took the 1-0 lead.
Set number two was even closer, but not to start. Barry took an early 6-1 advantage, but NSU battle back to tie it at 12-12. After a small flurry by the Bucs put them ahead 18-15, again the Sharks came back for a 21-21 tie, necessitating a Barry timeout.
NSU would take its only lead of the frame at 22-21, but the Bucs scored the last four points to take a two-set advantage.
Barry controlled most of the third set. They pushed ahead 8-2 to start, and the closest the Sharks got after that was five, at 10-5. A 5-1 run pushed the advantage to 10, and it was at least a nine-point Bucs advantage the rest of the way. The visitors won the match with a 25-14 final set.
Sydney Cook (So., Miami) was the only Shark in double digits in kills with 13.
Destiny Bannister (Jr., Kendall, Fla.) had a season-high eight and tied her season best with a .333 hitting percentage.
Libero
Candice Johnson (Jr., Chuluota, Fla.) had a match-best 16 digs, and
Katie Pyles (Fr., Denver) had 27 assists with only one ball-handling error. The Sharks were again with only one substitution besides the libero, Johnson.
The Sharks hit the road for two matches in the next week, their final two road contests of the season. They match up against Lynn in Boca Raton, Fla. on Tuesday, Nov. 12, and then head to Saint Leo to face the Lions on Friday, Nov. 15. Both matches begin at 7 p.m.
