FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The No. 16 Nova Southeastern baseball team (6-1) hit the road for an early season regional, high-profile weekend series with No. 2 Delta State (3-0) starting Friday, Feb. 15, along with a Saturday doubleheader in Cleveland, Miss.
The Sharks' 2012 season fell short to the Statesman at the NCAA South Region Tournament in an 8-5 decision. All signs this season point to the in-region showdown playing a major factor in the regional seeding down the road.
NSU won its fourth straight game Tuesday, Feb. 12 on the road, as the Sharks took down old South Florida rivals, the St. Thomas Bobcats (7-2), 6-2.
The Sharks displayed offensive depth against the Bobcats, which will be needed against Delta, as the 7-through-9 hitters went a combined 5-for-11 with three runs and five RBI.
Eric Acevedo (Sr., Miami, Fla.) hit his first home run of the year, a two-run shot in the eighth inning. He finished the night with three RBI and a run scored.
Brett Clements (Sr., Riverview, Fla.) went 2-for-4 with a team-best two runs scored and an RBI.
NSU went pitcher by committee, using nine hurlers on the night.
Patrick Kulick (So., Coral Springs, Fla.) started and held the Bobcats to no runs and two hits.
Shane Hill (Sr., Davie, Fla.) (1-0) pitched a scoreless third inning and earned his first win of the year.
Delta State is coming off a three-game sweep of Montevallo (3-4) this past weekend in the season-opening series at home. The Statesmen took games one and two easily, 11-1 and 7-1, but needed to rally from two runs down in the bottom of the 9th for a 9-8 victory in game three.
The first pitch is slated for 4 p.m. at Ferriss Field on Friday night, with a noon doubleheader start on Saturday. Live Audio for Friday's game can be located by click
