FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern softball team (9-8) lost both games in the home-opening doubleheader to the Lynn Fighting Knights (9-6), in a non-conference matchup at the AD Griffin Sports Complex, losing 4-1 and 7-1, respectively.
This was the first Lynn doubleheader sweep against the Sharks since April 2, 2005, which happened to be the first year the NSU softball program competed in the Sunshine State Conference.
On the day, the Knights outhit the Sharks, 24-9.
Laura Saladrigas (Sr., Hollywood, Fla.) and
Erika Garcia (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) led the Sharks in hitting, with two each over the span of both games.
Jennie Von Doellen (Jr., Hudson Bay, Canada) recorded six strikeouts in 8.2 innings pitched.
Game One
After two scoreless innings, the Sharks took their first and only lead of the evening, when in the third inning
Chelsea Emery Sr., Eustis, Fla.) belted a ball into deep left centerfield, easily bringing Saladrigas home, who stole second base during the Emery at-bat.
The Sharks saw their lead vanish for good in the fifth, after the Knights exploded for four runs on six hits. NSU could not recover from that deficit, as Lynn’s starting pitcher Kasey Murray (5-4), allowed two hits the rest of the game.
Melanie Spicola (So., Umatilla, Fla.) converted on a stolen base of her own in the fourth inning.
Game Two
The Knights jumped on the board right away, where they went on to score four runs on seven hits in the first three innings.
The bats for the Sharks couldn’t get going through first five innings, recording only two hits, which came from a Saladrigas double in the first and a
Chrissy Tabulov (Fr., Palm Harbor, Fla.) single up the left side in the fifth.
Lynn received another burst of offense, scoring three more runs on two hits in the top of the sixth. This run was led by a triple from Bianca Savulak, bringing in two runners.
The Sharks got their last run of the evening in the bottom of the sixth, when Saladrigas crushed another double into deep right centerfield, bringing home the speedy
Shelby Talon (Fr., Boynton Beach, Fla.), who was on second after a big double of her own.
The Sharks left 15 runners on base over the course of the doubleheader, resulting in missed opportunities.
NSU has another doubleheader scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 26, as they take on Mercyhurst at the AD Griffin Sports Complex, with the first pitched set for 5 p.m.
