FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern softball team (9-8) play its second consecutive home series, after a weekend off, against the Mercyhurst Lakers (5-3), Tuesday Feb. 26 at the AD Griffin Sports Complex.
The Sharks enter Tuesday’s games on a bit of a slump, losing six out of the last seven, with their last win coming on Feb. 16 in Tucson, Ariz. over New Haven, 6-3. NSU was led by
Shelby Talon's (Fr., Boynton Beach, Fla.) grand slam in the third inning, which gave NSU the lead for good.
NSU will look to get out of their early slump against the Lakers who they have had success hitting against in the past, recording 16 hits in the doubleheader against Mercyhurst last season.
In its first home series of the season against Lynn, the Sharks were swept by the Fighting Knights, which was the first sweep by Lynn since 2005.
The Sharks hold a 4-1 overall record against the Lakers going into Tuesday’s doubleheader. Mercyhurst’s lone win against the Sharks came last season, when the teams split a doubleheader at NSU. The Sharks won game one, 2-0, behind an impressive pitching performance from Sara Demuth, before the Lakers took game two, 10-5.
Mercyhurst, a 26-25 team a season ago, most recently came off a doubleheader split against Lynn, winning the first game, 4-2, before falling in the second, 4-3.
Leading the way offensively for the Lakers is Courtney Smith, who is batting .519 with a home run and five RBI. Mercyhurst has also been reliant on their starting pitcher Megan Hopton, whose perfect 4-0 record is backed up by a 0.80 era and has yet to allow a home run this season.
