FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 17 Nova Southeastern baseball team (2-1) will open its home schedule this weekend against the Albany State Golden Rams (0-0) at the NSU Baseball Complex. The home opener is slated for Friday at 6 p.m., with a noon doubleheader scheduled on Saturday.

The Sharks are coming off a successful opening weekend, in which they kicked off the season on the road against Columbus State. The Sharks won the series against the Cougars, allowing them to move up two slots in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II Preseason Poll. The Sharks entered the weekend preseason nationally-ranked for the first time and lived up to the lofty expectations.

Now the Sharks turn from a tough road opponent to a squad they have beaten by an average of 9.3 runs over the last six games. The student-athletes and the coaching staff will be able to take what they learned from opening weekend and refine the team over the next three games.

“The difference in preparation this week has been our attention to the details that we need to improve on in our first outside action,” said head coach Greg Brown. “Prior to Columbus State we had only intrasquads and practice situations to go on as far as our strengths and weaknesses. Now we have more information and are able to make the necessary adjustments for our upcoming series and beyond.”

NSU has little time to make those adjustments, as a bigger target remains a week out. After the Sharks’ series against the Golden Rams, they will travel to Cleveland, Miss. to face South Regional Champions, the No. 2 Delta State Statesmen. It will be a revenge series, as DSU ended the Sharks’ hopes of a regional title in 2012. It will also serve as battle between two teams claiming to be the best in the region early in the year. The Sharks will look to this weekend’s series to improve headed into the early season’s marquee matchup.

“Every day is a process to improving for us,” stated Brown. “We see every opponent as having different strengths and weaknesses and as long as we focus on our fundamentals, we will be prepared to play well and win. Our series against DSU will be a great challenge that I am excited for our student-athletes to face. They have a great program and the last time we squared up, we competed well.”

Last season, the Sharks defeated the Golden Rams by double digits in all three games of a weekend series. Although the bar has been set high, the ultimate goal for NSU will be to gain three wins and continue to improve as a team.

First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. Friday, and fans can follow the game via live video/audio HERE and live stats HERE. Follow the Sharks on Twitter at www.Twitter.com/NSU_Baseball.
