CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern softball team (6-1) were able to roll past the Florida Southern Mocs (0-7) behind great pitching and strong hitting in its third game of the Eckerd Invite Saturday, by a score of 4-1.
Eight more strikeouts for Sharks pitcher
Jennie Von Doellen (Jr., Hudson Bay, Canada) (4-1), were enough to give the Sharks a perfect 3-0 record, concluding day two of the tournament. The newcomer retired eight of her first nine batters in the game. After giving up the only run of the game for the Mocs, she kept the opposition to three hits.
It didn’t take very long for the Sharks to get on the scoreboard. In the first,
Ashley Silveira (Sr., Miami, Fla.) singled up the middle, bringing home
Lorena Spaulding (So., Pembroke Pines, Fla.), who dove head first to score the first run of the game. Silveira now has a team-high six RBI on the year, two more than any other Shark.
After no runs from either team in the second, the third proved big for
Chrissy Tabulov (Fr., Palm Harbor, Fla.). Tabulov crushed a ball down the left field line, over the third baseman’s head, bringing in Chelsea Emery (Sr., Eustis, Fla.) and
Shelby Talon (Fr., Boynton Beach, Fla.) from second and third, respectively.
A sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth for the Mocs cut into the Sharks’ lead, as the score read 3-1. However, that proved to be the closest the SSC rivals would get. In the bottom of the seventh, Silveira capped off a great day with a lead-off single. Pinch runner
Marissa Raimo (Sr., Hampton Bays, Fla.) scored her first run of the season on a wild pitch to solidify the final score.
The win puts the Sharks at their best record through seven games since the 2010 season.
The Sharks will head into the final day of the tournament, as they play West Florida at 9 a.m., then Columbus State at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 9.
