FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern softball team (11-9, 0-1 SSC) fell short to the No. 8 Rollins Tars (20-1, 1-0 SSC) on Friday night, 6-0 at the AD Griffin Sports Complex.
Jennie Von Doellen (Jr., Hudson Bay, Canada) (9-6) was one of the few bright spots for the Sharks, pitching all seven innings and striking out 12 Rollins batters, allowing only two earned runs on eight hits.
The second inning was the most promising for the Sharks, when the leadoff batter
Erika Garcia (Jr. Pembroke Pines, Fla.) crushed a ball into right field that bounced to the fence, to give the junior her first triple of the season. However, freshman Niki Fogle (9-0) retired the next three batters to get out of the jam.
Rollins scored a run in the second and third innings, and ran away with it in the fourth. The Tars managed four runs on three hits and caused two Shark errors to widen the lead to the eventual final, 6-0.
The Sharks did not register another hit in the final 2.2 innings when reliever Stephanie Sullivan took over pitching duties for the Tars.
The four Shark hits came from four different batters in
Melanie Spicola (So., Umatilla, Fla.),
Laura Saladrigas (Sr. Hollywood, Fla.),
Chrissy Tabulov (Fr., Palm Harbor, Fla.) and Garcia.
The Sharks are looking for revenge tomorrow, Saturday, March 2, as they take on Rollins in a doubleheader at the AD Griffin Sports Complex, with the first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
