Baseball Rolls Past Adelphi, 4-1

Sharks hold Panthers scoreless until the eighth inning.

BOX SCORE

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –
The Nova Southeastern baseball team (14-7) won its fifth straight game, the longest streak of the year, Wednesday against the Adelphi Panthers (6-4), 4-1, at home.

Angel Navarro (So., Miami Lakes, Fla.) continued his torrid streak, hitting 3-for-4 with two RBI out of the eighth spot in the lineup. Navarro is now hitting an even .500 through 15 games played and is reaching base in 54 percent of his plate appearances. Alex Marrero (Sr., Miami, Fla.) returned to the starting lineup and went 2-for-3 with a run and a RBI.

On the mound, Tyler Redding (Sr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) started and put forth his best performance of the year. The senior pitched six scoreless innings and held Adelphi to four hits. He also struck out four batters without a walk. Redding’s ERA dropped to 0.49 through 18.1 innings pitched. Josh Glick (Fr., Boca Raton, Fla.) held the Panthers to three hits in two innings, before Roberto Baroniel (So., Miami, Fla.) recorded his first save of the season in a perfect ninth inning.

The Sharks got on the board first in the second inning. Ryan Woodrey (So., Lighthouse Point, Fla.) led off by drawing a walk in his first at bat and advanced to third on the following two plays. Woodrey was plated on Navarro’s first hit of the day, a single through the left side.

In the next frame, the Sharks stretched their lead to two runs. Julien Plana (Fr., Miami, Fla.) scored the run after Marrero drew a walk with bases loaded, allowing Plana to easily cruise home. The Sharks would leave the bases loaded and allow the Panthers to stay in the game by going scoreless for the next four innings.

In the eighth inning, Adelphi scored a run and had the tying runner on third base. Glick held the Sharks’ lead by ending the top of the eighth on his second punch out. In the bottom of the frame, the Sharks posted two insurance runs to seal the win. Marrero started the rally with a single through the right side. After a bad pickoff attempt allowed Marrero to go to second, Brett Clements (Sr., Riverview, Fla.) pinch hit and was intentionally walked.

Instead of bunting Navarro, the coaching staff gave the sophomore the green light and he delivered. Navarro blasted a standup double to right centerfield that scored Marrrero. The Sharks capped off their night when Asuaje beat out the throw on an infield single to plate Clements for the fourth and final run.

Asuaje stole his 27th base on the night, bringing him just sixth stolen bases from the all-time top-five single season record holders in program history before conference season has started.

Sunshine State Conference action will start this weekend on the road, as the Sharks begin a weekend series at Eckerd on Friday at 6 p.m.
