Baseball Drops SSC Opener to Eckerd, 2-1

Contaldi takes loss despite striking out 11

BOX SCORE

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. –
The Nova Southeastern baseball team fell in a pitcher’s duel in their Sunshine State Conference opener against Eckerd Friday night, 2-1.

The Sharks (14-8, 0-1 SSC) and starter Vinnie Contaldi (Sr., Jupiter, Fla.) took the hard-luck loss, as the righthander gave up just seven hits and two runs. He struck out a season-high 11 Tritons, falling to 2-2 on the season. He was bested by Jordan Huchro, who scattered six hits and the one Shark run, striking out seven, in his complete game victory.

All of the scoring took place in the second inning. In the visitor’s half, Brandon Sedell (So., Davie, Fla.) reached on a leadoff single, and advanced two bases on two wild pitches. He scored on a double by Anthony Angulo (Sr., Homestead, Fla.) to give the Sharks a short-lived 1-0 lead.

The Tritons took the lead for good in the bottom half, with the eventual game-winner coming on an odd scoring play.

Eckerd’s Lee Spinelle singled to start the inning and scored on a Lincoln Durham double. One out later, with Durham on third, A.J. Witkowski struck out swinging. When the third strike was dropped, and the throw to first completed the out, Durham raced home with the go-ahead run.

NSU would have runners in scoring position in each of the fourth and fifth innings, and have at least one on in each of the last three innings, but was unable to plate any of them. Eckerd (12-10, 1-6 SSC), behind Huchro’s performance on the mound, picked up their first SSC victory of the year.

Sedell had three of the Sharks’ six hits on the night. In addition to Angulo’s double, Julien Plana (Fr., Miami) and Angel Navarro (So., Miami Lakes, Fla.) had the team’s other two baseknocks, both singles.

The Tritons and Sharks hook up for a Saturday doubleheader to finish off the series, with the game one start time scheduled for 1 p.m.
