FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern baseball team (17-8, 2-1 SSC) is set for a weekend home series against South Florida rivals, the Barry Buccaneers (18-10, 4-5 SSC) in the Plantation Ford/Weston Nissan Volvo Series of the Week. The series begins on Friday at 6 p.m. and concludes with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The Sharks enter the weekend after gaining serious momentum over the last seven days. Last Friday, the Sharks snapped a five-game winning streak in their Sunshine State Conference debut against Eckerd on the road, 2-1. To make matters worse, the Sharks would have to finish the series without star player
Carlos Asuaje (Jr., Weston, Fla.). Instead of folding, a sleeping giant awoke and the Sharks posted over 30 runs on Saturday. The charge was led by freshmen infielder
Kavan Thompson (Melbourne, Fla.), who went 9-for-9 on the day.
After taking Sunday off, the Sharks defeated Franklin Pierce at home on Monday, 7-4. The win became a higher profile one after the Ravens took out Lynn, 12-5, and scored seven runs on Tampa.
With three straight wins in the can, and a winning attitude engulfing campus after the women’s basketball regional championship, the Sharks are ready to make a run at the SSC title and a third-straight appearance in the NCAA South Regional Tournament. The Sharks have taken some tough losses in regional play, but the road to the postseason is still clearly marked.
With 21 conference games remaining, the Sharks, along with Lynn and Rollins, have the most SSC games to in the league. Aside from Florida Southern’s excellent 6-0 start, parody has run rampant through the SSC in 2013. At 2-1, the Sharks are in a four-way tie for second place. Although it will take hard work to maintain that position, NSU controls its destiny from here on out.
On the other hand, Barry has played nine conference games, tying for the most in the SSC. At 4-5, the Bucs have their backs against the wall and need a big run to contend for a SSC title. Unfortunately for the road team, the matchup will pit NSU’s league-leading .320 batting average against Barry’s 4.58 team ERA, which ranks seventh in the league.
