BOX SCORE

SAINT LEO, Fla.
– The Nova Southeastern University baseball team (18-11, 3-4 SSC) dropped the first game of a three-game road series against Saint Leo (21-10, 2-5 SSC), 8-2, which snapped a 10-game win streak against the Lions dating back to 2009.

Despite the loss, the Sharks were led offensively by Alex Marrero (Sr., Miami, Fla.) who went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored and Kevin Reynolds (Jr., Ft. Myers, Fla.) who had a solo jack..

NSU went through a few pitchers in the contest with the starter, Vinnie Contaldi (Sr., Jupiter, Fla.) (2-3), being credited with the loss in the contest after pitching 4.1 innings, giving up six runs on seven hits. In relief were Colton Rogers (Fr., Coral Springs, Fla.), who faced only four batters, Tyler Redding (Sr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.), who faced 14, giving up two runs on five hits, and Casey Kopec (Fr., Coral Springs, Fla.), who finished out the game for NSU facing only one batter.

It was three up and three down for both teams to start the game, but after a scoreless first two innings for the Sharks, it was the Lions that lit the board first in the home half of the second, generating two runs on three hits to take an early 2-0 lead.

The Sharks sparked some offense in the top of third loading the bases, but were unable to round anyone home. The Lions in return tacked on three more runs on four hits in the home half of the third to extend their lead to 5-0.

NSU continued their offensive progress from the third and were able to produce two runs in the fourth to cut their deficit to the Lions. Reynolds started off the inning with a solo shot over the left field wall to cut the lead to four. On the ensuing at-bat, Marrero rocked a stand-up double to right center and advanced to third off a ground ut to second by Brett Clements (Sr., Riverview, Fla.). The Sharks registered their second run on a RBI single through the left side by Angel Navarro (So., Miami Lakes, Fla.), which rounded Marrero from third to cut the lead to 3, 5-2.

After a couple of pitching changes by the Sharks starting in the fifth inning, the Lions tacked on three more runs in the remaining four innings to produce the 8-2 final margin.

The Sharks are back in action again Friday in a doubleheader against the Lions with first pitch slated for game one at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. for game two.
