FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern baseball team (9-6) is set to take on four different opponents over the next six days with their first game Tuesday night against the undefeated Southern New Hampshire Penmen (7-0) at the NSU Baseball Complex beginning at 6 p.m.
The Sharks are coming off a great weekend in which they swept the visiting Bentley Falcons with exceptional pitching by
Vinnie Contaldi (Sr., Jupiter, Fla.), who was named Sunshine State Conference Pitcher of the Week for tossing a complete-game shutout in the Sharks’ first 5-0 win. Working nine innings, surrendering just two hits with no walks and striking out five.
Mitchell Buerosse (Jr., Lighthouse Point, Fla.) (2-2) put in some solid work on the hill as well, allowing only one hit and no runs in his six-inning performance Sunday, facing 19 batters and striking out eight. Buerosse retired the first six batters he faced before giving up his first and only hit off a grounder to third.
The Sharks and Southern New Hampshire tangled last season with the outcome going in the favor of the Penmen, 14-7. The Sharks fell victim to their own fielding errors midway through the game in the sixth giving the Penmen a large seven-run lead. Only one of seven runs were earned.
In the end, the Sharks committed four errors to SNH’s two and recorded eight hits to the Penmen’s 19.
On Wednesday, March 6, the Sharks are at home once again taking on Wilmington University (5-3) with a 6 p.m. first pitch. The Sharks have not faced the Wildcats in the past few years but Wilmington did face Southern New Hampshire on Monday, falling 11-4. They take on Barry on Tuesday before battling with the Sharks the following night.
NSU has two scheduled weekend games this week, the first at home against the College of St. Rose (0-4) Saturday, followed by a Sunday road game in Santaluces, Fla. against Caldwell College.
The Sharks have a great track record against St. Rose, defeating them each of the last five times they've met, dating back to the 09-10 season. In those five confrontations NSU has outscored the Golden Knights, 53-18. Saturday’s matchup at the NSU Baseball Complex is scheduled for an early 10 a.m. start and will be the Golden Knights' fifth game in five days.
There is not much history between the Sharks and Caldwell, whose first game of the season is scheduled for this evening against Molby College. The Cougars will face the Sharks at 12:30 p.m. on their home field in Santaluces, Fla., which will be the Cougars' third game of the season (they face Southern New Hampshire the evening before).
