FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern softball team (13-15, 2-7 SSC) was swept by the visiting Eckerd Tritons (14-14, 2-4 SSC) Saturday, March 9, at the AD Griffin Sports Complex.
The Sharks lost game one, despite out-hitting the Tritons in a tight match-up, 4-3, then the Tritons broke out a six run inning in game two, which gave the vistors a comfortable 10-3 win.
Samira Tanaka (Jr., Sao Paulo, Brazil) led the Sharks in hitting on the day, going a combined 4-for-6 and crossing home plate on three separate occasions.
Shelby Talon (Fr., Boynton Beach, Fla.) kept her hot batting going, hitting another homerun and batting an even .500 on the day.
Elizabeth Spring (Fr., West Palm Beach, Fla.) recorded her first RBI this season, batting .333 on the day.
Game One
A Sharks throwing error in the seventh inning, allowing a Triton runner to reach home, was the difference in a tightly contested SSC battle.
The Tritons got on the board early, scoring two runs in the first, then adding another run in the second to give Eckerd a healthy 3-0 lead.
The Sharks cut into the lead in the second, with a Talon home run over the fence in left centerfield. The home run was Talon’s second in as many games and her third this season.
After a scoreless third, the Sharks kept the rally going in the fourth, when Spring’s base knock into right field brought pinch runner
Marissa Raimo (Sr., Hampton Bays, N.Y.) home from third.
The Sharks tied the game up in the fifth, after a
Laura Saladrigas' (Sr., Hollywood, Fla.) RBI double into the left-center gap, brought home Tanaka from second base.
The Tritons final run came during a pickle for base runner Taylor Styke, who was caught between third and home, however, the Sharks could not execute the run-down, allowing Styke to cross home on an errant throw.
The Sharks were able to get two runners on base in the final inning, however, Eckerd reliever Logan Rohrbach was able to get out of the jam, flying out the final at-bat of the game.
Game Two
The second game was a pitcher’s duel between Saladrigas and Kaitlyn Dougherty for the first three innings, seeing only one hit from each team in that span.
The fourth inning was where the Tritons were able to open up another 3-0 lead, before the Sharks’ Saladrigas knocked a sacrifice fly into center, to get Tanaka home safely.
After each team was able to bring in a run in the fifth, the Tritons broke the game open, with a six-run sixth inning, making the score 10-2.
Ashley Silveira (Sr., Miami, Fla.) prevented the mercy rule, when she lit a ball into left field that nicked off the glove of the left fielder, allowing Tanaka to score from second for the final run of the game.
The Sharks were out hit, 13-7, in game number two.
The Sharks will now take a week off before they travel to Barry, who swept Florida Southern this weekend, for another pivotal conference series, starting Friday, March 15, in Miami Shores, Fla.
