FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern softball team (21-23, 6-15 SSC) will face the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish (23-19) Wednesday, April 17, beginning at 5 p.m., where the Sharks will host their annual Strikeout Cancer game and the Plantation Ford/Weston Nissan Volvo Game of the Week.
The first 200 fans to arrive at Wednesday’s Strikeout Cancer game will receive a free Think Pink T-shirt courtesy of Moe’s Southwest Grill on University Drive. During the game, NSU softball will be selling pink ribbons to all fans for one dollar, where all proceeds and donations will benefit the American Cancer Society.
NSU enters Wednesday’s series dropping two of three against Florida Southern in Lakeland, Fla. last weekend. The Sharks took game one of the series, 3-1, thanks to a three-RBI performance from
Laura Saladrigas (Sr., Hollywood, Fla.), including a two-run home run in the fourth inning. The Sharks dropped games two and three by a combined three runs, due to strong pitching from the Mocs.
Samira Tanaka (Jr., Sao Paulo, Brazil) is coming in with a hot bat, hitting .600 in the three games against the Mocs. Tanaka went 3-for-3 and scored twice in Friday night’s win.
Erika Garcia (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) hit her second home run of the season, in game two of Saturday’s doubleheader, which tied the game for the Sharks in the fourth inning.
The team has been flawless at home as of late, riding a seven-game home-winning streak, with their last loss at the AD Griffin Sports Complex coming on March 23 against Saint Leo.
Palm Beach Atlantic comes into the week winning seven of their last eight games, which included sweeps of Lynn and Barry and a series split with Florida Southern. PBA has a doubleheader against Florida Tech Monday, April 15, starting at 5 p.m.
The Sailfish have six starters who are hitting better than .300 this season. PBA’s Lindsey Johnson is batting .388 and is the team leader in home runs (six) and has more than twice as many as RBI as any other player on the PBA roster (39).
These two teams squared off in NSU’s second series of the season in West Palm Beach, Fla., a series that was split. The first game was taken by the Sailfish, 2-1, who were led by freshman pitcher Amber Johnson. Johnson allowed just three hits, two of which came from Saladrigas. The lone RBI of the game came from an Ashley Silveira (Sr., Miami, Fla.) base hit in the seventh, as the Sharks were looking to make a late rally. The Sharks bats came to life in the second game, winning 6-3.
Lorena Spaulding (So., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) and Garcia recorded four of the Sharks’ six hits, while Silveira recorded two RBI.
