FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern softball team (20-21, 5-13 SSC) completed its sweep over the Lynn Fighting Knights (18-23, 4-10 SSC), winning, 4-3, in a game that saw a lot of rain at the AD Griffin Sports Complex.
With the victory, the Sharks build on their longest win streak of the season, seven, heading into next weekend’s series with Florida Southern.
Erika Garcia (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) (4-3) picked up her fourth straight win from the circle, as she allowed just one earned run and striking out one batter.
The Sharks got on the board first in the second inning on a bases-loaded throwing error from Lynn's catcher Devin Kochergen. Kochergen was trying to keep
Chelsea Emery (Sr., Eustis, Fla.) close to third but sailed the ball over the third baseman’s head, allowing Emery to score easily.
Lynn quickly responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to take a 2-1 lead.
After scoreless innings in the third and fourth, NSU was able to regain the lead, with three big runs in the fifth.
Laura Saladrigas (Sr., Hollywood, Fla.) started the scoring with a two-out single up the middle, plating
Melanie Spicola (So., Umatilla, Fla.) to even up the score. Garica kept the inning going with an RBI double to right center, allowing Saladrigas to score.
Shelby Talon (Fr., Boynton Beach, Fla.) brought in the final run of the inning with a RBI single up the middle to expand the Shark lead to 4-2.
The Fighting Knights were able to get one back in the sixth on an Anne Marie Van Casteren single that scored Kasey Murray from third. However, that was the closest Lynn would get, as Garcia retired the side in the seventh inning to preserve the win.
NSU has the week off before it travels to Lakeland, Fla. for another conference series against the Florida Southern Mocs, starting Friday, April 12 at 7 p.m.
