Box Score FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University volleyball team (10-13, 3-8 SSC), fell to the Lynn University Fighting Knights, 3-1 (23-25, 25-21, 29-27, 25-21), Friday, October 31, 2014, in the NSU Arena in the Don Taft University Center.
Katie Pyles (So., Denver, Colo.) notched her third triple-double of the season with 12 kills, 34 assists and 12 digs.
Sydney Cook (Jr., Miami, Fla.) tallied a double-double with team-highs, 15 kills and 21 digs, followed by
Dana Holger (Jr., Lino Lakes, Minn.) who was short of a double-double with 11 kills and nine digs.
Candice Johnson (Sr., Chuluota, Fla.) had 14 kills on the night.
The opening set saw 12 ties and 12 lead changes, as both teams exchanged the first points. The Sharks took the side-out on a kill by Melcher before going on a three-point rally to take a 20-17 lead. However, the Fighting Knights caught up on three Sharks errors and came atop, 21-20, on a kill by Claire Angelich. The Sharks bounced back and kept the Fighting Knights in a two-point margin, closing with a 5-2 run on three kills by Holger and a service ace by
Courtney Crawford (Jr.,Brooksville, Fla.) for the, 1-0, match lead, 25-23.
As in the first set, the teams battled in the first couple points. Lynn broke the final tie of the game at 18 with the help of a three-point rally with back-to-back kills and an error. The Fighting Knights were able to keep the Sharks away before NSU brought in one more battle. With Lynn up, 24 -19, the Sharks brought in two more points on an error and kill by Pyles before the Fighting Knights closed the set, 25-21, for a 1-1 match tie.
The Sharks carried their late momentum into the third set, carrying a lead for the majority of the game after the taking the side out on a 5-5 tie. After a Fighting Knights service error, back-to-back kills by Melcher and Pyles put the Sharks up by two, while an error followed by a service ace put the Sharks up by five, 10-5. NSU maintained a two-point lead for the majority of the game until a 5-2 rally brought the Fighting Knights within one. With the Sharks up, 15-11, Lynn started to creep on two service errors, and two kills brought them to 17-16. The Sharks regained a two-point margin and threatened to close the set off a block by Donahue at 24-22, but the Knights brought in the two points needed on two errors to tie the set at 24. The teams exchanged points and did not give up, and a kill by Holger gave NSU a 27-26, lead. The Knights would take the 2-1 match lead on a kill and error for the, 29-27, set win.
NSU led the score for the majority of the final set, holding their highest point margin of the game at five with a 15-10 lead. The Sharks kept Lynn from scoring at that point, posting two blocks in the set, until the Fighting Knights played a five-point rally from behind and took a 22-19 lead on two kills and three errors. The Sharks managed to bring in two more points on an error and kill by Melcher before the Fighting Knights closed the set and match, 25-21.
The Sharks return to the NSU Arena in the Don Taft University Center Saturday, Nov. 1, to host Florida Tech at 4 p.m.
