Box Score LAKELAND, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University women's soccer team picked up their first Sunshine State Conference victory of the season, in thrilling overtime fashion over Florida Southern Saturday evening at Barnett Field, 3-2.
Julia Nytorp's (Jr., Örnsköldsvik, Sweden) second goal of the match, with 3:25 remaining in the first extra frame, gave NSU (4-3-0, 1-2-0 SSC) the win. It came off a cross from the right side by freshman
Carley Montgomery (Fr., Sanford, Fla.) to Nytorp at the far post, who not only provided the golden goal, but also the first (and only) Shark lead of the match.
Despite being outshot in the first half by the Sharks, 8-5, the Mocs (4-2-3, 0-2-0 SSC) held a 1-0 lead at the break. After an uneventful start to the second half as far as scoring opportunities wenet, the action came fast and furious for a 10-minute span late, allowing NSU to equalize, not just once, but twice.
FSC nearly added to their lead in the 76th minute when Kirra Rainbow slipped past the defense, but her hard chip over NSU goalkeeper
Amanda Kopale (R-So., Cape Coral, Fla.) ricocheted off the crossbar.
Instead, the Sharks got their first goal less than two minutes later.
Cydney Niedermeyer (So., Fort Myers, Fla.) had a throw-in from side and got it into the box to Nytorp, who made it a 1-1 game with 13:46 on the clock.
The home team moved back ahead less than three minutes after that. With 11:09 to go, an FSC corner saw Rainbow putting it in off the pass from Sheila Ramos for another home lead at 2-1.
It would be five minutes before the next great challenge, one that would see the Sharks capitalize. With 6:24 remaining, quite a ways past the top of the box,
Sarah Keville (Jr., Vero Beach, Fla.) won a 50/50 ball and ripped a screamer past FSC keeper Erin Moseley to knot the game yet again, 2-2.
In an attempt to give NSU their first lead, off a corner in the 87th,
Elizabeth Haumschild (Jr., Riverview, Fla.) went just over the bar. It was the best chance for either team before the two headed to overtime, the Sharks' second straight SSC road match with extra action.
All told, the Sharks had 18 shots to the Mocs' 13, and doubled FSC in shots on goal, 12-6. Kopale had four saves as one of five Sharks to play all 97 minutes.
Next up for NSU is a home match on Wednesday night against Barry at 4:30 p.m., the first tilt in a women's and men's doubleheader.
