Box Score 2 FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The Nova Southeastern University volleyball team (11-14, 4-9 SSC) fell to the Florida Southern Mocs (21-15, 11-2 SSC), 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-21), Friday, Nov. 7, in the NSU Arena in the Don Taft University Center.
Sydney Cook (Jr., Miami, Fla.) led the way with a double-double on 11 kills and 10 digs, followed by
Natalie Melcher (Fr., Reshion Letzion, Israel), who had six.
Katie Pyles (So., Denver, Colo.) notched a team high 24 assists, while
Candice Johnson (Sr., Chuluota, Fla.) posted a match-high 20 digs.
The opening set saw an early battle, as both teams fought to take the first marginal lead of the night. The Sharks tied the score twice on three kills by
Dana Holger (Jr., Lino Lakes, Minn.) and
Devyn Main (Fr., Port Charlotte, Fla.), before the Mocs broke away at 8-8 on back-to-back kills. Florida Southern pushed their lead to 14 -11 before the Sharks capitalized on a side-out and stole the lead. A four-point run off three errors tied the score at 14 and a kill by Holger put the Sharks up, 15-14. However, the advantage was short lived, as the Mocs tied the score at 15 on the next point and came back on top with a three-point run. The Mocs held the advantage for the rest of the set until its 25-21 close.
The Mocs carried their late momentum into the second set. The Mocs jumped to an early 5-1 lead and did not look back. With Florida Southern up, 19-14, the Sharks were able to cut the deficit on a three-point rally off two errors and a kill by Main. NSU was able to keep the Mocs within a three-point grasp on kills by Main and Cook, but the Mocs regained their five-point lead. Florida Southern took the 2-0 match lead after the second set, ending 25-20.
The third set opened up like the second, with the Mocs taking an early, 4-0 lead. Florida Southern kept the Sharks in a four-point distance throughout the set, but on their highest hitting percentage of the match, the Sharks put up one more fight. With the Mocs up, 22-19, the Sharks took a late side-out for a three-point run that brought them within two. Cook brought in the first two points of the run, followed by a kill by Melcher to bring the Sharks close, 23-21. Another kill by Melcher kept the Sharks in the game, but a kill by Kate Stromberg ended the match at 25-22 for the Mocs to take the win.
The Sharks return to the court Saturday, Nov. 7, to face the Saint Leo Lions at 4 p.m. in the NSU Arena at the Don Taft University Center for their designated Senior Day.
