Sharks Baseball Tops Philadelphia Twice in Doubleheader

The Sharks’ 9-1 start is the best 10-game start to a season in program history.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern baseball team (9-1) took care of the Philadelphia Rams (0-2) in Thursday's doubleheader at the NSU Baseball Complex. The Sharks won game one, 3-0, then came back and topped the Rams, 5-1, in game two.

The Sharks nine wins through the first 10 games of the season is the most by any NSU team in program history.

Roberto Baroniel (Jr., Miami) had yet another strong performance on the mound in game number one, winning his third game in as many tries. He pitched a complete seven inning game, allowing just four hits and not giving up a run. Baroniel now has a 1.29 ERA in 21 innings of work.

Seth Natal (Jr., Oakland Park, Fla.) had a solid outing on the mound in game two, going 4.2 innings, allowing just two hits, while striking out three Rams batters.

Game one was played in the pitchers favor early on, as Baroniel and Cory Dean allowed a combined three hits through the first two innings.

The Sharks finally broke through, scoring all three of their runs with two outs in the fifth. Alvin Swoope (Fr., Port St. Lucie, Fla.) started it off with a double, one of his two on the day, clearing the bases and scoring both Andrew Liberty (Fr., Boca Raton, Fla.) and Casey Gibson (So., Fort Myers, Fla.) from first and second, respectively.

NSU would get their final run of the inning and the game after Mario Urdaneta's (Jr., Ocala, Fla.) single through the left side scored Swoope from third after he advanced on a throwing error.

Brooks Fleming (Sr., Palm City, Fla.) batted well in game one earning a team-high in hits going 2-for-3.

Game two was knotted up, 1-1, heading into the sixth, before Ryan Woodrey's (Jr., Lighthouse Point, Fla.) RBI-single to center gave the Sharks the lead for good, going up 2-1.

Geoff Jimenez (Sr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) extended the lead to 3-1, on an infield single, as part of his 2-for-3 performance, that scored Angel Navarro (Jr., Miami Lakes, Fla.) from third. The Sharks final two runs of the game came later in the sixth, on a throwing error by the Rams second baseman David McTaggart, scoring both Liberty and Teft Hill (Fr., Fort Myers, Fla.).

Ronald Patella (So., Davie, Fla.) picked up his first win of the year, after coming in for relief for Natal in the fifth, with two outs and runners on the corners. Patella ended the inning and didn't allow a hit through 1.1.

Josh Glick (So., Boca Raton, Fla.) finished the game off in the seventh in a non-save situation. Glick allowed one hit and struck out two, during his one inning on the mound.

NSU got the game going in the first, earning a run off a Urdaneta double to left, scoring Jimenez from third.

The Rams tied up the game, scoring their first and only run of the doubleheader, in the fifth on a Hunter Greenwood sacrifice fly to center, before the Sharks took over the game in the sixth.

Navarro went a perfect 3-for-3 in game two.

The Sharks will finish off their series with Philadelphia on Sunday, Feb. 16, starting at 12 p.m. at the NSU Baseball Complex.
