COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Nova Southeastern baseball team (12-1) won their second and final game of their South Carolina road trip, topping the Benedict Tigers (0-8) 10-4 on Saturday afternoon.
Julian Loret de Mola (Jr., Miami) (3-0) pitched six hitless innings in relief, striking out seven Tiger batters with only one batter reaching against him, on a fielding error in the third.
Brooks Fleming (Sr., Palm City, Fla.) and
Mario Urdaneta (Jr., Ocala, Fla.) combined for six RBI, three each, in Saturday's win. Fleming went 3-for-5 with a run to go along with four putouts in right. Urdaneta went 3-for-4 with two runs on the day.
The Sharks finished the game with six stolen bases to Benedict's four. Benedict led the nation in stolen bases the last five seasons.
NSU played from behind early on, after the Tigers scored two runs in the first. It wasn't until the third until the Sharks broke through, scoring three runs in the top half.
The Sharks didn't let off, scoring three in the fourth, one in the fifth and three more in the sixth, bringing the lead to 10-2 after six.
Benedict would cut into the final score, scoring a run in the eighth and ninth to end the game.
Angel Navarro (Jr., Miami Lakes, Fla.) had the team's second triple of the season in a 1-for-4 performance, bringing in two runs.
Alvin Swoope (Fr., Port St. Lucie, Fla.) scored three times in a 2-for-4 outing at the plate. Swoope finished with a team-high five assists.
Kavan Thompson (So., Melbourne, Fla.) picked up his second RBI of the year in the sixth with a single to right. Thompson went 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Andrew Liberty (Fr., Boca Raton, Fla.) picked up his first collegiate RBI, bringing in
Alexander Fernandez (Jr., Davie, Fla.) in the fifth, on one of the team's three doubles on the day. Fernandez went 1-for-4 with a run scored.
Geoff Jimenez (Sr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) was walked twice and scored once in the Sharks win.
Yandy Viera (Jr., Hialeah, Fla.) was walked, hit by a pitch and scored once in an 0-for-2 day at the plate.
Ryan Woodrey (Jr., Lighthouse Point, Fla.) went 1-for-1, after coming in to pinch hit for Navarro in the eighth.
Dillon Frye (Jr., Raleigh, N.C.) saw his first action of the season, starting the game and pitching one inning, striking out one and allowing two.
Matt Hardy (Fr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) relieved Loret de Mola in the eighth, pitched for one inning, striking out one.
Casey Kopec (So., Coral Springs, Fla.) pitched the ninth, striking out a batter of his own.
The Sharks get six days off before opening conference play in Melbourne, Fla. against the Florida Tech Panthers in a three-game road series.The opener will take place this Friday, Feb. 28, at 6 p.m.
