PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. - The Nova Southeastern University softball team (9-6) exchanged the lead twice before falling to the Flagler Saints (9-9), 12-8, in the last game of the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish Showdown.
The game was a two-day affair that saw half the game played on Saturday and the final three innings played Sunday. Flagler struck first and took the early 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first off of an NSU walk and error.
The Sharks closed the score to 4-2 in the top of the third, as
Erika Garcia (Sr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) singled up the middle for the to drive in a pair of runs.
NSU took the lead for the first time in the game durig the fourth inning. Melanie Spicola (Jr., Umatilla, Fla.) started NSU's four-run scoring drive, tripling to left center and scoring on her own run. Dakota Villella (Fr., Hollywood, Fla.) came up next and advanced off a pitcher's catching error. She would go to second, as Samira Tanaka (Sr., Sao Paulo, Brazil) came up to bat next and was walked. Back-to-back singles to left field by Lorena Spaulding (Jr., Pembroke Pines) and Gina Bondarenko (Sr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) brought Tanaka and Villella home. A single by Garcia brought in the sixth and seventh runs for the Sharks, putting the Sharks up, 7-4.
The Saints' Mackenzie Conley and Christen Moon tied the game at seven, as they both doubled to left center field and brought the Saints three RBI.
The Sharks fought at the top of the sixth with Holly Roberson (Sr., Dunnellon, Fla.) notching her first RBI of the season, singling to left center for the final Shark run of the game.
Conley then came up to bat for Flagler and scored another two for the Sharks, homering past centerfield, getting the Saints the win at 12-8.
The game concluded Sharks play in the Sailfish Showdown. NSU went 3-1 in the tournament, improving its record to 9-6. NSU continues road play in St. Petersburg, Fla. Friday, Feb. 28, to open conference play against Eckerd at 7 p.m.
