Box Score
MELBOURNE, Fla. – The No. 6 Nova Southeastern baseball team (13-1, 1-0 SSC) outduels the No. 5 Florida Tech Panthers (12-3, 0-1 SSC), 5-2, in 11 innings in the first Sunshine State Conference showdown of the season, Friday night in Melbourne, Fla.
Angel Navarro (Jr., Miami Lakes, Fla.) hit the clutch go-ahead, two-run double in what was a 2-2 ball game in the top of the 11th, putting the Sharks up for good in a classic SSC battle.
Casey Gibson (So., Fort Myers, Fla.) tagged on the fifth and final run, scoring Navarro on two-out single up the middle.
Josh Glick (So. Boca Raton, Fla.) (1-0) pitched an incredible 2.2 innings for the Sharks. Glick entered the game with one out in the ninth and got out of a bases loaded jam to send the game into extras. He then struck out all three batters in the heart of the order in the 10th before finishing it off, en route to his first win of the season, in the 11th. Glick struck out five batters in relief.
Roberto Baroniel (Jr., Miami) made it difficult for the Panthers hitters to get anything going, allowing two runs on just four hits and striking out five in 7.1 innings on the bump.
The game was a pitchers duel throughout, as Baroniel and FIT's Ashton Fronsoe allowed a combined one run through seven innings of work. The Panthers picked up the run and the 1-0 lead in the fifth.
With six outs left for the Sharks, NSU finally broke through in the eighth.
Ryan Woodrey (Jr., Lighthouse Point, Fla.) came in to pinch hit for
Kavan Thompson (So., Melbourne, Fla.), with runners on the corners. Woodrey drove a single up the middle, scoring
Alexander Fernandez (Jr., Davie, Fla.) from third. After an intentional walk to
Alvin Swoope (Fr., Port St. Lucie, Fla.) (3-for-4) loaded the bases, reliever Brett Porter walked
Mario Urdaneta (Jr., Ocala, Fla.), which scored Navarro and gave the Sharks their first lead of the evening.
Ronald Patella (So., Davie, Fla.) came in to relieve Baroniel with one out and runners on the corners in the eighth. Patella looked strong early, striking out the first batter he faced for the second out of the inning. However, after an intentional walk loaded the bases, Patella walked the next batter, tying the game back up at 2-2. Patella grounded out the following FIT batter to get himself out of a bases loaded jam.
The Sharks were shutout in the top half of ninth. Glick, with the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth, got Jorge Chavarria to fly out to
Geoff Jimenez (Sr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) in centerfield.
The 10th inning was a quiet one for the Sharks offensively, going three up, three down.
These teams will finish off their series tomorrow in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. in Melbourne.
