CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern softball team swept the second day of the Eckerd College Tournament including one of the biggest wins in program history.

The Sharks (4-4) defeated No. 5 Atlantic Armstrong 5-3 and Flagler College 5-4, giving them a three-game winning streak.

Game 1

Despite Armstrong Atlantic being ranked number five in the nation, the Sharks took control of the game and kept the lead throughout all seven innings of the contest.

With just one out, Melanie Spicola (Jr., Umatilla, Fla.) prepped the Sharks for an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second, getting her first two RBIs of 2014, bringing Maegan Lee (Jr., Miami, Fla.) and Rebecca Thonrton (Fr., Lodi, Ca.) home. Three batters and due to a Pirates' pitching error, Spicola takes advantage of the opportunity and scores a run for the Sharks boosting them up to 3-0.

Armstrong Atlantic would cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the fifth off the bats of Alexis Mercer and Peyton Roth, who both got RBI singles. The Sharks offense would fight back and push their lead by two more in the bottom of the fifth. Dakota Villella (Fr., Hollywood, Fla.) and Samira Tanaka (Sr., Sao Paulo, Brazil) reached off of back-to-back Pirates errors. Erika Garcia (Sr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) sacrificed them both over, and Gina Bondarenko (Sr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) followed with her first RBI of the season, extending the Sharks' lead to 5-1.

The Pirates would score one more run at the top of the seventh, but not enough to take the 'W,' as the Sharks pull the upset and put themselves in a winning streak.

Game 2

The Sharks would find themselves playing the Flagler Saints for the third time in the 2014 season, as the Saints swept NSU in their home-opening doubleheader.

Three RBI in the top of the first gave Flagler the early 3-0 lead, but the Sharks quickly tied the game in the bottom of the inning, as the Sharks scored three unearned runs off of Flagler errors, making the game even at 3-3.

The game would stay the same as Garcia would come in to pitch in the second and hold the Saints to four hits for the rest of the game before Thornton would close out the game for the second time this season.

The Sharks' last runs of the day were made in the fourth inning, as Bondarenko would get her second RBI of the day and push the Sharks up 5-3.

Flagler would get one more run, but Thornton, who only allowed five hits in Friday night's game versus West Florida, notched her second save of the season and help the Sharks get their third consecutive win.

The Sharks now look to extend their three-game winning streak in their last campaign in the Eckerd Tournament vs No. 6 Valdosta State. First pitch is Sunday morning at 10 a.m.
