Box Score

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The No. 17 Nova Southeastern baseball team (17-4, 4-3 SSC) topped the Barry Buccaneers (16-7, 0-4 SSC), 3-2, in 10 innings, on the road Friday night.

Mario Urdaneta (Jr., Ocala, Fla.) was the hero, as he batted in the game-winning run with two outs in the top of the 10th to give the Sharks their fourth conference win of the season. Alvin Swoope (Fr., Port St. Lucie, Fla.) led off the 10th with an infield single to the shortstop, who threw the ball away, allowing Swoope to reach second. Swoope was then able to tag up and advance to third, after Andres Visbal (Fr., Miami) flew out to deep right. After a strikeout in the next at bat, Urdaneta took one back up the middle to score Swoope.

The Bucs were knocking on the door in the bottom of the 10th, putting runners on the corners with two outs. However, Ronald Patella (So., Davie, Fla.) finished off the Bucs, striking out the final at bat of game one. Patella pitched three full innings en route to his second win of the year. Patella (2-0) struck out four batters and allowed just two Barry hitters to reach base.

Roberto Baroniel (Jr., Miami) started the game for the Sharks and pitched a solid seven innings for NSU. He allowed just two runs to a Barry team who entered Friday's game with a 199 runs, the fourth highest output in the nation. Baroniel stymied the Bucs offense through the first five innings, allowing just one hit through the first 19 batters he faced.

The Sharks started the scoring in the second on a Yandy Viera (Jr., Hialeah, Fla.) sacrifice fly to left, scoring Urdaneta from third. Urdaneta led off the inning, getting a free pass on a walk. Alexander Fernandez (Jr., Davie, Fla.) followed after being hit by a pitch. Those runners moved over, after a rare balk.

NSU opened their lead to two in the sixth, after Fernandez batted in his fifth run of the year, this time, on a double to right center, scoring Brooks Fleming (Sr., Palm City, Fla.) from second.

Barry finally got on the scoreboard in the home half of the sixth, breaking up Baroniel's scoreless outing, to even up the score line at 2-2.

Following a tough sixth inning defensively for NSU, the Sharks would allow just two hits the rest way.

Swoope, who led the team in hits, went 2-for-5 with a run Friday.

Barry's Adrian English had a game-high three hits, in a 3-for-4 performance. He also scored once.

The losing pitcher Joe Iorio (1-1) entered the game with two outs, down two, in the sixth. Iorio allowed one run, unearned, on two hits in 3.2 innings of work.

The Bucs starter, Adrian Benitez, pitched 5.2 innings, allowing two earned on five hits.

These teams will conclude their series tomorrow afternoon in a doubleheader, beginning at 1 p.m. in Miami Gardens.
