ST. LEO, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern Sharks dropped their first contest, 7-1, against Saint Leo on Friday night, to open up their three-game road series against the Lions.
The Lions took a 4-0 lead in the first inning, scoring four runs on two errors, four hits and three stolen bases. They added runs in each of the second and fourth innings to push their lead to 6-0.
The Sharks avoided the shutout in the top of the sixth.
Krista Colburn (Jr., Meade, Colo.) set up the scoring, reaching base on an error by the Lions third baseman.
Lorena Spaulding (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.), pinch running for Colburn, advanced to second on passed ball, and was brought home by
Erika Garcia (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) on a single to centerfield. Garcia went 2-for-2 in the night, notching NSU's only RBI in the game.
McKenzie Burns notched an extra run for the Lions to finalize the home team's 7-1 win.
The Sharks return to the field tomorrow at 1 p.m. to face the Lions in doubleheader play.
