MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The No. 17 Nova Southeastern baseball team (18-5, 5-4SSC) split the final two games of the three game series, in the doubleheader against Barry (17-8, 1-5 SSC), Saturday afternoon in Miami Gardens, Fla. The Sharks took the early game to clinch the series, 10-9, before dropping the final game, 5-3.
The Sharks bats came alive in game one, with eight players in NSU's starting lineup recording at least one hit.
NSU got on the board early, scoring four quick runs to put themselves ahead in the first inning. Barry immediately responded, scoring three in the home half of the first, then two more in the second to take a momentary lead, in the high-scoring affair.
The Sharks bats kept rolling, scoring one in the third, three in the fourth and their final two in the fifth, to break the lead open to 10-5. However, the nation's fourth highest scoring offense wasn't finished. Barry tacked on a run in the fifth, and then three more in eighth, to bring the game to 10-9 going into the final inning.
The Sharks were blanked in the ninth, setting up for nervous moments in the bottom half.
Josh Glick (So., Boca Raton, Fla.) (3), who came in for relief, with two on and no outs in the bottom of the eighth, allowed a lead-off single to start the ninth. A sacrifice bunt moved the base runner to second, with one away. However, that would be the closest the Bucs would get, as Glick forced a fly out and a ground out for the final two outs of the game.
Glick pitched two innings, allowing one run on two hits. This was the first run against Glick of the season.
Julian Loret de Mola (Jr., Miami) (5-1) picked up his fifth win of the year, going 4.2 innings, allowing six runs, five earned, on eight Barry hits, while striking out three.
Seth Natal (Jr., Oakland Park, Fla.) had a strong day in relief, allowing just one earned on one hit, in 2.1 innings of work.
Andrew Liberty (Fr., Boca Raton, Fla.) had a great outing in game one from the designated hitter spot, going 2-for-5, with two runs batted in.
Alvin Swoope (Fr., Port St. Lucie, Fla.) also went 2-for-5 in the first game, recording a RBI and a run, with one double.
Yandy Viera (Jr., Hialeah, Fla.) finished the first game, with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate, recording a RBI and scoring twice. Both of his hits were doubles.
Geoff Jimenez (Sr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) also had two hits in five plate appearances, scoring once in the first and again in the fourth.
Brooks Fleming (Sr., Palm City, Fla.) went 1-for-4, scoring the first run of the afternoon, on a single to left to score Jimenez. Fleming also scored twice in game one.
Kavan Thompson (So., Melbourne, Fla.), went 1-for-3, to go along with a RBI and a walk. His RBI scored the final run of the Sharks 10-run outburst, scoring Viera on a double to left in the fifth.
Mario Urdaneta (Jr., Ocala, Fla.) matched Jimenez's and Swoope's performance, also going 2-for-5 and scoring a run of his own.
The losing pitcher, Jesse Montalto (2-2), the Bucs starter, went three innings, allowing six runs, three of which were earned on six hits.
Game two was a different outcome but had a similar start. The Sharks rushed out to a 3-0 lead in the second, after
Michael Hernandez (Fr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) blasted his first home run, a three-run shot, of his collegiate career, over the left field fence.
NSU's lead didn't last long when, in the next inning, Barry picked up three runs of their own, all coming on three different base hits.
Barry took the lead for good, scoring two more in the sixth, to put themselves up 5-3.
The Sharks bats were quiet in game two, recording just three hits against Barry's pitching staff.
Calvin Rayburn (1-0) picked up the win after coming in for relief. Rayburn pitched 2.1 innings, not allowing a single hit and walking just one.
Dillon Frye (Jr., Raleigh, N.C.) started the final game of the series, allowing three earned on six hits in five innings of work. Frye struck out three Bucs batters on the day.
Alexander Fernandez (Jr., Davie, Fla.) got the unfortunate loss, allowing one unearned run on just one hit, in one inning of relief.
The Sharks will take a short break from Sunshine State Conference action, with a home game against Northwood on Monday at 3 p.m., with a game the following day, back in Miami Gardens, to take on St. Thomas. That game has a 6 p.m. start time.
