MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The No. 15 Nova Southeastern baseball team (19-5) topped the Northwood Seahawks (15-11-1) in dominating fashion Monday night at the NSU Baseball Complex, winning 12-3, while recording a season-high 17 hits.
Mitchell Buerosse (Sr., Lighthouse Point, Fla.) set the tone right from the get-go, striking out nine batters in six innings of work. Buerosse (3-0) gave up just four hits and didn't allow a run en route to his third win of the season. Buerosse now has 15 strikeouts in his last two outings.
The Sharks bats came to play Monday afternoon, as nine different players recorded at least one hit, totaling a season-high 17 hits.
Yandy Viera (Jr., Hialeah, Fla.) was a triple short of the cycle, going 4-for-5, with two RBI and scoring on two separate occasions.
NSU began their scoring outburst early on, scoring twice in the first inning to set the tone. In the fourth, they tacked on to that lead four more runs, to put themselves up 6-0.
After the Sharks added another run in the home half of the sixth, the Seahawks finally got on the board in the seventh, when they brought across two runs to cut down the Sharks lead to five.
That would be the closest the visitors would get, when in the bottom of the seventh the Sharks scored three more times, including Viera's first home run in a Sharks uniform. The blast was a solo shot over the left field fence.
Northwood managed one more in the eighth, before
Alexander Fernandez (Jr., Davie, Fla.) put the nail in the coffin, with a two-run single in the bottom of the eighth.
Drew Packard (Sr., Knoxville, Tennessee) finished out the game, pitching 2.2 innings, allowing one run on five hits.
Geoff Jimenez (Sr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) matched his career high in hits as a Shark, going 3-for-5, with a RBI and two runs. He also had a game-high two stolen bases. Fernandez also had a career day. This was the first time he had multiple doubles and multiple RBI in a single game. Fernandez went 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Angel Navarro (Jr., Miami Lakes, Fla.) had a strong showing at the plate, going 2-for-4, with two RBI and two runs. He also picked up his fifth double of the season.
Alvin Swoope (Fr., Port St. Lucie, Fla.),
Julian Pino (Fr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.),
Andres Visbal (Fr., Miami) and
Ryan Woodrey (Jr., Lighthouse Point, Fla.) all recorded one hit and one RBI on the afternoon. For Pino, this was his first collegiate RBI and second hit of his short career. Woodrey was able to score on three separate occasions, while Visbal scored twice and picked up his fourth career stolen base Monday afternoon.
The Seahawks starting pitcher, Austin Wilson (2-0), picked up the loss against the Sharks. Wilson pitched three innings and gave up three earned on six hits.
The win gives the Sharks a 14-1 non-conference record, with their lone loss coming against Pfeiffer early in the year.
The Sharks will have a quick turnaround as they play their makeup game against St. Thomas in Miami Gardens, Fla. Tuesday evening at 6 p.m.
