FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – After an unexpected weekend off, the Nova Southeastern University women's soccer team returns to action with a road conference match Wednesday night, heading to Melbourne to take on Florida Tech.
The Sharks (9-2-0, 2-1-0 SSC) were scheduled to take on Saint Leo this past Saturday at home, but due to unavoidable travel issues, that match will soon be rescheduled, with date and time TBA. Now, with eight days off match-wise under their belt, they will face a team just ahead of them in the Sunshine State Conference standings in Florida Tech (7-3-1, 3-2-0 SSC).
While NSU has won six in a row, the Panthers have taken four wins in six matches, including a tie, in that same timeframe. Their last loss was Sept. 26, 1-0 vs. then-No. 10 Rollins, with wins over Palm Beach Atlantic (3-0) and Lynn (1-0) immediately following. Last time out, on Saturday, they and Embry-Riddle played to a scoreless draw in two overtimes.
Keria McCarthy leads FIT in goals (six) and points (14), while tying for the lead in assists (two) with three other teammates. Aubri Williamson has four goals, 10 points and is one of those with two assists. Goalkeeper Julia Kantor has played every single second of the season in net for the squad, an even 1,010 minutes, only giving up seven goals for a conference-leading average of 0.62. She is third in save percentage as well at 83.3.
The night off on Saturday dropped Shark forward
Sierra Lelii (R-Sr., Seminole, Fla.) to sixth in the country in goals scored, but she is still third in goals per game and seventh in points per game. Should she tally a goal or assist on Wednesday, it would be the 10th such occurrence of the season for her, and a goal would tie NSU's single-season program record.
Team-wise, many milestones are still in reach on Wednesday night as well. A win by the Sharks would mark the seventh 10-win season in program history (the fourth in the NCAA era), and would tie the program record for the quickest team to reach 10 wins (the 2006 squad also started 10-2). A seventh win in a row would match the second-longest winning streak in team history, and would be only the fourth all-time win streak of at least seven games (2000, 2006 and 2007).
