FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – In the midst of a breakout season, the Nova Southeastern University women's soccer team will pay homage to 12 of their players during Senior Night ceremonies on Saturday, prior to hosting a tough No. 16 Rollins squad at the NSU Soccer Complex.
The Sharks (10-2-0, 3-1-0 SSC) have won their last seven matches, holding off Florida Tech on Wednesday, 3-2, to notch double digits in wins for the first time since 2007. In order to reach eight wins in a row, and tie the all-time win streak set in '06, they would need to knock off a team above them in the Sunshine State Conference standings (and last year's National runners-up) in the Tars (9-3-0, 4-2-0 SSC).
Prior to the 7 p.m. kickoff, a total of 12 Sharks will be honored for Senior Night:
Samantha Gestido (Hialeah, Fla.),
Elizabeth Haumschild (Riverview, Fla.),
Sarah Keville (Vero Beach, Fla.),
Amanda Kopale (Cape Coral, Fla.),
Sierra Lelii (Seminole, Fla.),
Stephanie Moench (Austin, Texas),
Julia Nytorp (Örnsköldsvik, Sweden),
Lauren Paul (Stockton, Calif.),
Samantha Rommel (Gilching, Germany),
Tori Vives (Cooper City, Fla.),
Nika Wang (Tucson, Ariz.) and
Cameron Wylie (Dallas, Texas).
The group has combined to play nearly 7,500 minutes on the pitch this season (which includes seven of the top eight individuals), scoring 26 of the Sharks' 36 goals and assisting on 18 of the 24 credited to the team. They have taken 69 percent of the team's shots, with 55 percent of those shots on target. Of the team's 10 game-winning goals, seven are by seniors, and none of those stats take into account the effort on the other side of the pitch, with Moench, Paul and Wylie helping to form the majority of the last line of defense, oftentimes in front of Kopale, for a unit that has only allowed a total of 17 goals and a shot percentage of 11.2 percent.
The most recent win over FIT gives the Sharks nine points to move them into a tie with those Panthers for fourth place in the conference ledger, behind Barry (15) and Rollins and Tampa (12 each). Rollins remains the only undefeated SSC team in road matches this season at 4-0, and they have gone 5-1 in their last six, the lone hiccup being a 1-0 double-overtime loss at home to league-leading Barry on Oct. 10.
Emma Bloom leads the Tars with seven goals and 14 points, one more in each category than Kathryn O'Brien. Mora Johnson and Paxton Sickler each have added four goals apiece. The team's defense has been strong this year, as they tie for third in the SSC in the least amount of goals given up, 13, while their two goalkeepers, Mary Spring (seven matches, seven starts, 583 minutes) and Carly Stevens (seven matches, five starts, 524 minutes) have combined for over five saves a match, second-highest among conference teams.
They will have to combat the league's top offense statistically, in goals (36), goals per game (3.0), points (95), points per game (7.92), shots (221), shots per game (18.4), shots on goal (121), SOG per game (10.1) and scoring margin (+1.58). The Sharks' scoring offense, total goals, total points and points per game, along with total assists and assists per game, all rank 26th or better in the nation.
Senior Night ceremonies are scheduled to begin at approximately 6:40 p.m. for the 2015 Shark class.
