MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University men's basketball game came back from 16 down to take a late lead, but were upended in the final minute by Lane Saturday, 85-80 at the FIT Winter Classic.
The Sharks (4-6) trailed 65-49 with 12:35 to go, the biggest lead for either team, but scored the next 10 – and 16 of the next 18 – to tie things up at 67-67 nearly four minutes later (8:38). Lane (6-7) kept ahead for the next eight-plus minutes, but the Sharks kept within shouting distance, down between only one to four points.
Finally, with 1:03 left, NSU pushed back into the lead, when
Harrison Goodrick (Jr., Sydney, Australia) made 1-of-2 free throws to break a 70-70 tie and give the Sharks their first advantage since the 4:55 mark of the first half. Unfortunately, Lane successfully converted all six of their free throw attempts, starting with 56 seconds left and rounding out the scoring with just 2.1 to go to take the win.
During the comeback run,
Chris Page (Sr., Plainfield, Ind.) had 10 points and would end the game with team-high honors of 20. Goodrick had 19, a new season high and just one off his career best, while also with a solid game was
Casey Carroll (R-Jr., Youngstown, Ohio) with nine points and seven rebounds.
Troy Spears (So., Martinsville, Ind.) was next with eight, while
Mike Chalas (Sr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) and
Nick Pendergast (Sr., Woodbridge, Conn.) were both perfect from the field and scored seven each.
Terrance Bridgeman of Lane led all scorers with 27 points, but the Sharks limited him to just six after the break. Kendarius Ash had a double-double with 17 points and a game-best 10 rebounds.
NSU will now break for the holidays before returning to action Jan. 2, hosting SSC provisional member Embry-Riddle at 4 p.m. at the NSU Arena.
