Box Score 2 FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The weekend warriors did it again, as Nova Southeastern University's baseball team (11-3) defeated Albany State University (1-15) twice on Friday night, winning game one of the doubleheader by a score of 18-2 and defeating the Golden Rams in game two by a score of 7-0.
Game 1 Roberto Baroniel (Sr., Miami, Fla.) (3-0) earned the win in game one, pitching five innings and allowing just two runs, while striking out seven batters.
Gilberto Torres (Fr., Miami, Fla.) and
Steven Fleming (Jr., Stuart, Fla.) took care of the rest, combining for two innings of work and three strikeouts.
In a mutual decision run-rule shortened game, the Sharks offense was relentless, putting up a season-high 18 runs and 16 hits.
Mario Urdaneta (Sr., Ocala, Fla.),
Alexander Fernandez (Sr., Davie, Fla.) and
Kavan Thompson (Jr., Merrit Island, Fla.) each recorded three hits in the game, highlighted by Thompson's first career home run.
After posting nine runs in the first three innings, the Sharks offense struck gold in the fourth inning, doubling their run total to take an 18-2 lead. The fourth inning marked the second time in the game that the NSU lineup batted around, first doing so in the second inning when the Sharks tallied six runs.
The hot hitting
Roche Woodard (Sr., Tampa, Fla.) continued his stellar week at the plate, going 2-for-4 on the day with two stolen bases.
Nick McNeil (Jr., Clearwater, Fla.) and
Michael Hernandez (So., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) matched Woodard with two hits of their own.
In one of the most outrageous stat lines this season,
Andres Visbal (So., Miami, Fla.) went 0-for-0 in the game with four walks in four plate appearances, registering two RBI. Visbal earned four of the team's eight walks on the night.
Game 2 Doing what he has done all year long,
Alex Mateo (Jr., Miami, Fla.) (3-0) was dominant, throwing just 65 pitches in a seven-inning complete-game shutout of the Golden Rams to earn his third win of the year.
All the run support that Mateo needed came in the third inning, beginning with a Thompson walk, followed by a
Dylan Woods (So., New Symrna Beach, Fla.) sacrifice bunt. Woodard then singled, scoring Thompson. Urdaneta trailed Woodard with a single, driving Woodard in for the second run of the inning.
The Sharks tacked three more runs in the fourth inning, playing a bit of small-ball with three bunts.
Antonio Rodriguez (Jr., Coral Gables, Fla.), Thompson and Woods each laid down bunts, causing the Albany State defense to panic, resulting in a successful offensive attack for the Sharks.
The night was capped off in jaw-dropping fashion by
Yandy Viera (Sr., Miami,Fla.), sending his second home run of the year well over the scoreboard in left field, landing deep into the construction zone, 40-feet beyond the left field wall.
The Sharks will be back in action Saturday at noon, looking to complete the sweep of the visiting Albany State Golden Rams. Be sure to tune in by following the links on the
