Box Score FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern University's baseball team (12-3) completed the sweep of Albany State University (1-16) on a wet Saturday afternoon, defeating the Golden Rams by a score of 11-1 in a mutual-decision, run-rule shortened game. The sweep marks the fourth of the year for NSU, the most sweeps in a year since 2013.
The Sharks received another quality start from
Ryan Castellanos (Jr., Davie, Fla.), tossing a six-hit complete game, striking out a total of eight batters. With the win, Castellanos pushes his record to 4-1, leading the team in wins.
After a quick 1-2-3 top of the first inning from Castellanos, the NSU offense wasted no time, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Roche Woodard (Sr., Tampa, Fla.) led off with a triple off of the right field fence, followed by two straight hit by pitches from
Mario Urdaneta (Sr., Ocala, Fla.) and
Alexander Fernandez (Sr., Davie, Fla.).
Justin Garcia (Jr., Hialeah, Fla.) then walked, scoring Woodard for the first run of the game.
Andres Visbal (So., Miami, Fla.) followed with a sacrifice fly to centerfield, driving in Urdaneta.
Michael Hernandez (So., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) capped the bottom of the first inning with a two-run double, crushing the ball deep to centerfield to drive in Fernandez and Garcia.
Both sides went quiet for the next two innings, before Albany State scored its first run of the game on a throwing error by the Sharks, a mistake that happened multiple times on both sides throughout the game due to the wet conditions.
NSU answered right back with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, led by a Hernandez double to left-centerfield, later scoring on a wild pitch. Urdaneta followed the wild pitch with a sacrifice fly to deep left field, scoring
Dylan Woods (So., New Symrna Beach, Fla.). The Sharks added two runs in the bottom of the fifth as well, beginning with a single to right field from Garcia, who scored on a triple off of the centerfield wall from
Nick McNeil (Jr., Clearwater, Fla.). McNeil was then driven in by Hernandez, who grounded out to the shortstop for the RBI.
Fernandez, Garcia and
Ryan Dodge (Fr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) added a RBI each in the bottom of the sixth inning, moving the score to 11-1. Castellanos would seal the deal in the top of the seventh inning, completing the sweep of the Golden Rams.
The Sharks will be back in action on Tuesday, hosting Felician College before heading north on I-75 to begin conference play against Saint Leo University on Friday night.
