Box Score FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 6 Nova Southeastern University Sharks (17-3; 3-0) defeated the American International College Yellow Jackets (1-5) on Tuesday night by a score of 19-10.
Gilberto Torres (Fr., Miami, Fla.) earned the first win of his career, throwing two innings, while striking out three.
The Sharks fell into a hole early, surrendering seven runs in the first two innings.
Cameron Churchill (Fr., Palm Harbor, Fla.) lasted just 1.1 innings, after allowed two runs in the first inning, and four earned runs in the second inning. After Churchill allowed a run and loaded the bases in the top of the second,
Matt Hardy (So., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) came in to pitch and the first batter he faced sent a grand slam over the left field fence to make the score 7-0. Hardy allowed another run in the top of the third inning, as the Yellow Jackets had ten hits through three innings.
The Sharks began climbing back into the game in the bottom of the third inning, scoring two runs on a passed ball and a double from
Mario Urdaneta (Sr., Ocala, Fla.). Urdaneta's double increased his hitting streak to 14 games, one of twelve 14-game hitting streaks since 2003. NSU added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring on a RBI single from
Roche Woodard (Sr., Tampa, Fla.) that drove in
Antonio Rodriguez (Jr., Coral Gables, Fla.).
Torres came in to pitch in relief of Hardy, holding the Yellow Jackets to no runs in the top of the fifth, giving the Sharks momentum heading into the bottom of the fifth inning. NSU used that momentum and scored one run, thanks to a RBI single from Woodard, making the score 8-3. NSU added two more in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit to only three runs.
The Yellow Jackets lead was thrown out the window in the bottom of the sixth, as the Sharks scored 13 runs to take a 18-8 lead. The entire lineup scored at least one run in the inning and NSU was one batter away from batting around twice, a feat rarely accomplished in the game of baseball.
NSU added a run in the bottom of the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly from
Ryan Dodge (Fr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.), scoring Urdaneta. AIC followed, adding two runs in the top of the eighth, to make the score 19-10. The scoring ended there, closing the book to a 31-hit, rainy and humid Tuesday night at the NSU Baseball Complex.
The Sharks will be back in action Friday night at 6 p.m. against Adelphi University.
